LOS ANGELES (LALATE EXCLUSIVE) – Could Real Housewives of St Louis soon battle Welcome to Sweetie Pies? Real Housewives of St Louis “will never, ever, ever, ever happen”, Bravo’s Andy Cohen emphatically told news a year ago last month. Cohen at the time said, in his opinion, a show about St Louis would not be exciting and not do well in the ratings. But in one year, Andy Cohen has been proven wrong by one woman: Oprah Winfrey.
In the last year, Oprah’s struggling OWN cable network has found ratings gold with a reality show about cooking, arguments, a battling family members. No, it’s not another Teresa Giudice storyline. It’s Welcome to Sweetie Pies, the St Louis reality show about Miss Robbie Montgomery, a former singer for Ike and Tina Turner.
Cohen has been a proud STL native featuring items from the city during his Bravo telecast of WWHL. But during a November 2011 WWHL episode, Cohen left St Louis natives in shock about his comments. During a telecast featuring Cynthia Bailey and Keshia Knight Pulliam, Cohen fielded a caller. He said “Oh, excellent, so you know I’m a St Louis guy, right?” The viewer (a housewife herself from outside St Louis) asked Cohen why he hasn’t brought Real Housewives of St Louis to Bravo. The caller fumed “Yeah [Andy], so when are you going to represent and give us the Real Housewives of the S-T-L?”
Cohen replied “It’s not going to happen, my friend… it will never, ever, ever, ever happen.” Cohen, further told news “You know what? I have seen that show, and it is … (snooze)… it is not exciting. I have to keep the people entertained.”
Not so, thinks Craig Piligian and OWN. In two season, and thirty-two episodes, the Pilgrim Studios produced reality show for OWN has proven that St Louis can deliver entertaining programming. The show featuring Miss Robbie, Tim Norma, Lil Charles and others has been nominated for the NAMIC Vision Awards and NAACP Image Award while also dominating the ratings.
Since the show’s run, Miss Robbie has expanded from Sweetie Pie in Florissant and Sweetie Pie’s at the Mangrove to the new Sweetie Pie’s Upper Crust. Located at 3643 Delmar Blvd St Louis, MO 63110, Upper Crust has dominated news episodes for OWN this month.
So with the success of Welcome Sweetie Pie’s, is Cohen rethinking his comments about Real Housewives of St Louis? For now, RHOSTL remains in doubt; but Cohen is interested in a reality show about a restaurant, Sur, coming to Bravo next month with “Vanderpump Rules”.
