Viktoria Chapman Cornelius, Don Cornelius Tensions Revealed from Divorce

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Viktoria Chapman Cornelius and Don Cornelius tensions from the couple’s bitter divorce are being revealed to news today. Viktoria Chapman Cornelius has yet to comment about the death of her ex-husband. But in 2008, Viktoria Chapman had Don Cornelius arrested (no mugshot photo released). The two then went through a bitter divorce. And while a nation, friends, and family mourn the loss of a visionary who changed the landscape of the television and music industry, there remain questions still why the Soul Train host killed himself.

Don Cornelius was arrested in 2008 after Viktoria Chapman Cornelius claimed she was attacked. The two were married at the time. Don Cornelius married the Russian model in 2001. The two tied the knot after a failed marriage with his first wife that produced two sons, Anthony and Raymond.

But in 2008, Don Cornelius was accused of “corporal injury resulting in traumatic condition of a spouse”. He was arrested for felony domestic violence. He eventually accepted a plea of misdemeanor domestic violence, probation for three years, and fines. The probation was recently completed. At the time of Cornelius’ arrest, the victim’s name was not released to news.

But later news reports revealed the victim was Viktoria Chapman Cornelius. He had claimed alleged abuse as well. But she filed multiple restraining orders against the Soul Train creator. One time she even pepper sprayed him.

Cornelius left no suicide note yesterday. He killed himself in a single gunshot wound to the head. “He and his son had a conversation earlier and the son came over and found his father in that state,” said Officer Sara Faden said in a news statement to the Daily Beast.

It remains unclear Cornelius’ condition this week. Some friends called him “frail”, while others called him actively working to bring the program back to television.

He had undergone brain surgery in 1982 and had suffered a stroke this decade. He told ABC News roughly twenty years ago “You’re never quite the same afterward [after brain surgery]“.

But two years ago, Cornelius told a divorce court to rush up the resolution of his matter because of his health condition. “I am 72 years old. I have significant health issues. I want to finalize this divorce before I die.”

Don Cornelius, however, was preparing his return to television. He was in development on bringing the program back to television syndication and launching a film project as well. Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson remembered Cornelius yesterday. Magic told news “Don Cornelius was the first African-American to create, produce, host and more importantly OWN his own show.”

Soul Train aired nationally from 1971 to 2006. It still holds the record of being the longest running syndicated TV show ever. Cornelius created an initial road show locally in Chicago in the late 1960s.

By 1970, he convinced a local station to aired the same road show, Soul Train, as a TV show. The show was such a big hit its first year locally that it was cleared for fifteen markets for national syndication the next year, a remarkable feat even by today’s standards. The Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, the Soul Train Christmas Starfest, and the Soul Train Awards would later follow.

Don Cornelius once told news “I figured as long as the music stayed hot and important and good, that there would always be a reason for Soul Train.” Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Send your love.

Don Cornelius Arrested mugshot Accuser, Ex-Wife Viktoria Chapman Cornelius, Gets Death Policy Money

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Don Cornelius’ arrest accuser, ex-wife Viktoria Chapman Cornelius, will get the policy benefits of the Soul Train host’s life insurance policy, claims TMZ. Don Cornelius was arrested in 2008 for felony domestic violence. While initial news reports did not release the alleged victim’s name, nor Don Cornelius’ mugshot, subsequent news reports later confirmed the alleged victim was the Cornelius’ then wife
Viktoria Chapman Cornelius. While she had Cornelius arrested, he reportedly told investigators that she allegedly attacked him as well.

In the years that followed, Don Cornelius in divorce court documents said that he wanted out of his marriage with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius as soon as possible. The Soul Train host urged the divorce court to speed up the handling of his matter with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius because of his deteriorating health and because of the strain the divorce was taking on his health.

Earlier this morning, Don Cornelius committed suicide. He killed himself in a single gunshot to the head inside his Los Angeles area home.

As a result of his 2008 arrest, Cornelius agreed to a no contest plea. The case was reduced to a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction; Cornelius agreed to a three year probation which recently had ended.

But in recent years, the divorce with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius had continued. In 2009, the Soul Train host urged the court to speed up the proceeding. The divorce was finalized in 2010.

It remains unclear Cornelius’ health condition today when he took his life. But in recent years he had reportedly suffered brain surgery following a stroke. Friends report that the once vibrant, brilliant, insipirational music visionary had become frail.

TMZ reports, based upon statue and the divorce settlement, Cornelius’ ex-wife will get the policy payout of two life insurance policies, amounting to $300,000 in benefits.

Soul Train was created by Cornelius as a disc jockey in 1965. He called a caravan of shows across local schools The Soul Train. Then in 1970, WCIU-TV aired his road show as a television program. Sears, Roebuck and Co served as the show’s first sponsor.

Within one year, the show as moved to syndication in twenty-four additional markets for the 1971 tv season. Don Cornelius hosted the show until 1993. Later hosts included Mystro Clark, Shemar Moore and then Dorian Gregory until the show ended in 2006.
