Don Cornelius Arrest Accuser, Ex-Wife Viktoria Chapman Cornelius, Gets Policy Money

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Don Cornelius’ arrest accuser, ex-wife Viktoria Chapman Cornelius, will get the policy benefits of the Soul Train host’s life insurance policy, claims TMZ. Don Cornelius was arrested in 2008 for felony domestic violence. While initial news reports did not release the alleged victim’s name, nor Don Cornelius’ mugshot, subsequent news reports later confirmed the alleged victim was the Cornelius’ then wife Viktoria Chapman Cornelius. While she had Cornelius arrested, he reportedly told investigators that she allegedly attacked him as well.
In the years that followed, Don Cornelius in divorce court documents said that he wanted out of his marriage with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius as soon as possible. The Soul Train host urged the divorce court to speed up the handling of his matter with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius because of his deteriorating health and because of the strain the divorce was taking on his health.
Earlier this morning, Don Cornelius committed suicide. He killed himself in a single gunshot to the head inside his Los Angeles area home.
As a result of his 2008 arrest, Cornelius agreed to a no contest plea. The case was reduced to a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction; Cornelius agreed to a three year probation which recently had ended.
But in recent years, the divorce with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius had continued. In 2009, the Soul Train host urged the court to speed up the proceeding. The divorce was finalized in 2010.

It remains unclear Cornelius’ health condition today when he took his life. But in recent years he had reportedly suffered brain surgery following a stroke. Friends report that the once vibrant, brilliant, insipirational music visionary had become frail.
TMZ reports, based upon statue and the divorce settlement, Cornelius’ ex-wife will get the policy payout of two life insurance policies, amounting to $300,000 in benefits.

Soul Train was created by Cornelius as a disc jockey in 1965. He called a caravan of shows across local schools The Soul Train. Then in 1970, WCIU-TV aired his road show as a television program. Sears, Roebuck and Co served as the show’s first sponsor.
Within one year, the show as moved to syndication in twenty-four additional markets for the 1971 tv season. Don Cornelius hosted the show until 1993. Later hosts included Mystro Clark, Shemar Moore and then Dorian Gregory until the show ended in 2006.

The show was referenced in countless other pograms over the years. Cameron Diaz appeared in a Soul Train scene in Charlie’s Angels. It was depicted in Spike Lee’s film Crooklyn as well.
Cornelius’ last TV production was the 8th Annual Soul Train Christmas Starfest. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Don Cornelius will be greatly missed.
