Range Rover Evoque Wins SUV of Year

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Range Rover Evoque has won SUV of the year. Motor Trend magazine bestowed the Range Rover Evoque as SUV of the Year; the vehicle first made news after an alliance with Victoria Beckham in 2010. Land Rover won the honors today beating out the Jeep Wrangler, the Dodge Durango and the Journey.
Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Angus McKenzie said in a news statement today that “With its dramatic styling, refined on-road manners, and impressive off-road ability, the Evoque sets the benchmark for the fast-growing compact luxury SUV class.” He added “Land Rover has a worldwide hit on its hands with the Range Rover Evoque.”
The car’s real design triumph is by Jerry McGovern who says it was inspired by the 2008 Range Rover LRX concept vehicle. McGovern says his approach is a “natural progression” to his idea to “stretch the Range Rover brand”, attract consumers who usually wouldn’t have bought a Ranger Rover, and appeal to them through use of “falling roofline” and a “rising beltline.”
In July 2010, Ranger Rover unveiled the truck and told news that Victoria Beckham will team up with designers. Later they confirmed the announcement of a Evoque Victoria Beckham Special Edition.
Land Rover managing director Phil Popham previously said of the vehicle “It was important to give the car a name that was instantly recognisable through language and cultural boundaries throughout the world. We wanted to create a new name which was innovative and different.” He added “A name which implies exclusivity and arouses emotions. It is cosmopolitan and cross-continental, sophisticated and matches the car’s urban elegance.”
