Nellis Air Force Base: Tanker Explosion Erupts on Sloan

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A purported tanker explosion near Nellis Air Force Base is being reported today May 17, 2013. The believed tanker explosion was reported by local news shortly after 11:30 AM PST today. No reports of injuries have yet to be detailed by news. The explosion was not on the Base. It was on Sloan Lane, allegedly near Cardlock Fueling of Las Vegas.

In a statement moments ago, Clark County FD confirms to news that it is battling a fire. CCFD told news “@ClarkCountyFD fighting a #fire at 4915 Sloan. E23 in Cmd. #ccfd #vegas”. Clark County officials would not confirm that a tanker is involved.

FOX5 is reporting that a vehicle might be in involved. It too noted that CCFD would not specify the type of vehicle on fire, reporting that CCFD had suggested “somebody may be trapped inside”.

A local news reporter is indicating that the vehicle is, however, a tanker. Dan Landson reported shortly after 11:30 am PST today that “Tanker explosion reported near Nellis Air Force Base in North Las Vegas #vegas”.

The fire is believed to have erupted as early as 11 am PST today. The location is centered north of Las Vegas Boulevard on 4915 Sloan Lane. No reports of road closures have yet to be issued to news. A news briefing is expected momentarily. UPDATE: Landson is reporting “Firefighters: 1 Person dead in explosion near Nellis Air Force Base.”

Joey Porter Set Free after Paying $70,000 to Hard Rock Casino

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Joey Porter has been set free after an arrest last weekend. Joey Porter was set free on Christmas Eve, officials tell news, after been arrested for allegedly writing bad checks. Porter was arrested pursuant to a warrant out of Las Vegas. Porter had allegedly wrote a bad check for $70,000 to the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. So, to get of jail on Monday, Porter had to reportedly write a (good) check for that same amount to the hotel.

Joey Porter was taken in by police on Friday night. A warrant had been issued for his arrest out of Clark Count, Nevada. At issue was a check he wrote with allegedly insufficient funds. On Friday, that warrant was effectuated during a routine traffic stop, not in Nevada, but in Bakersfield.

Porter was stopped for a traffic ticket shortly after 9:46 pm Friday night. But during a quick check, officers released that Porter a warrant against him. Lt. Scott Tunnicliffe of the Bakersfield Police Department told news that Porter was taken in on Friday by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office and held through Sunday.

The check at issue was reportedly a payment of $70,000 to the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. The theft and bad check complaint was filed earlier this year. Prosecutor Samuel Bateman in Las Vegas tells news that Porter paid the amount over the weekend. His charges will reportedly be dropped.

Blackjack Dealer Stabs Another at Bellagio Hotel

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A blackjack dealer stabbed another in a Las Vegas feud this week. After one female blackjack dealer at the Bellagio stabbed another female blackjack dealer inside the casino, one dealer was arrested and another was hospitalized. This is the second violent attack inside a Las Vegas casino this week.

For reasons still unclear, Brenda Wilson became furious on Friday night. Wilson, 50, was allegedly working as a blackjack dealer on the floor of the Bellagio Casino at the time. But by the end of the evening, Brenda Jean Stokes, 50, was charged with burglary, battery with a deadly weapon, battery with use of a deadly weapon-substantial bodily harm and mayhem, reports KSNV Channel 3.

Wilson allegedly used a weapon against another blackjack dealer’s face, leaving deep “facial wounds” and sending the victim to the Sunrise Hospital. The weapon was described as a sharp object.

News reports are inconsistent if the dealers were on duty or not during the feud. Metro Officer Marcus Martin says the case is still under investigation. The motive behind the attack remains unknown. The name of the victim has yet to be released to news. MGM spokeswoman Yvette Monet has yet to indicate if either employee has been terminated from their position. The victim’s condition has yet to be indicated to local news.

Akingide Cole: Casino Chip Theft Arrest Made in Los Angeles

Akingide Cole: Casino Chip Theft Arrest Made in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Akingide Cole (photo above) has been arrested. The Casino Chip theft ended in an arrest, officials tell news today. News of Cole’s arrest was announced today, but officials confirm that Cole was nabbed back on October 24, 2012.

Police claim that Akingide Cole is the 31 year old who stole $1.6 million in casino chips from the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas weeks earlier. Police claim that Cole allegedly got into “a closed area of the casino” to pull off the crime.

The chips-case dominated news for the bizarre nature of the theft. News analysts questioned how the suspect would ever cash in the chips since they can only be redeemed for money at the cashier’s desk in the Venetian.

Police previously told news that the “suspect was able to gain access into a closed area of the casino from which he removed the chips of various values.” Police said in a news statement earlier this month that “There were no weapons involved in this crime, and no confrontation occurred between the suspect and others during this incident”. Officials tell news that, of the $1.6 million in chips, only $396,000 of them was recovered. The Venetian Hotel has yet to comment about the matter.

North Las Vegas Disaster Area Raises Eyebrows

North Las Vegas Disaster Area Raises Eyebrow

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – North Las Vegas is a disaster area, officials want you to believe. When travelers hear that North Las Vegas is a “disaster area”, they might think the town look like a scene out of Inception. But the concept of “disaster area” has nothing to do with crumbling structures; it concerns a crumbling local economy.

City Council member Wade Wagner is waging a fight to insure that North Las Vegas maintains its disaster area status. But Wagner’s assertion concerns foreclosures. He claims that, because of growing foreclosures, property values have fallen, therein causing property taxes to drop, and hence giving less earnings for the town. But does that really qualify as a “disaster area”? No, says local unions.

In a news statement this week, Wagner said that the City needs $9 million to be saved. He believes his town is under fiscal emergency. And despite his efforts, Wagner knows that similar attempts by other cities nationally to use emergency declarations have caused eyebrows to be raised.

And while signs across the city read “Warning: Due to recent police layoffs, we can no longer guarantee your safety”, the real trouble is not crime but foreclosures. He claims that his city is “ground zero” for the nation’s real estate bust. He claims that North Las Vegas is one of the worse cities to have suffered through the housing foreclosure crisis. But as the state’s fourth largest city, North Las Vegas could soon be taken back by the State.

And yet, while the disaster declaration might sound peculiar to travelers, it may soon sound even more peculiar to a Court. The police union has filed a suit against the City. They claim that the City is using the law to avoid paying local union workers. Sgt. Leonard Cardinale, president of the North Las Vegas Police Supervisors Association, says that the town is not a disaster area. Rather it’s a city fighting its unions at a time of fiscal troubles.

Fired for Bye-Bye? Melodee Megia Sues Cosmopolitan Resort Las Vegas

Fired for Bye-Bye Greeting? Melodee Megia Sues Cosmopolitan Resort Las Vegas

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Melodee Megia claims she was fired for a “bye-bye” greeting, rather than a “goodbye” message, by Las Vegas operator The Cosmopolitan Resort. Megia has filed suit after she claims the Las Vegas hotel fired her for saying informally “bye-bye”, not goodbye. But she asserts that the firing was allegedly motivated by pregnancy discrimination.

Melodee Megia in 2011 was eight months pregnant. She was also an employee as Las Vegas resort The Cosmopolitan. She began working at the hotel a year earlier in November. By December, the hotel opened its doors to the public.

But shortly during her pregnancy, Megia claims she was allegedly harassed. When sought for reaction to the lawsuit, Amy Rossetti, public relations director of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, declined comment. In a news statement, Rossetti said “As a matter of company policy, we do not comment on pending litigation.”

Megia retained Mark Thierman and Jason Kuller after her firing. But the labor attorneys in their mind found more alleged faults than the firing. Megia is filing two different suits.

First, she is suing for pregnancy discrimination. She claims the ” stated reason for [her] termination was that she said ‘bye bye’ instead of ‘good bye’ on the telephone to a room service customer”. She claims she was fired “based on her pregnancy”.

The suit also claims “In fact, this was merely a pretext as [Megia] had been subject to harassing conduct and other pretextual discipline leading up to her termination since the time her pregnancy was learned by [the hotel].”

Second, she is also pursuing a class action suit for workers’ wages. Her suit claims that employees are not paid for the time that they have to change in and out of their uniforms. The suit claims that the Hotel allegedly wrongfully “maintained timekeeping policies that always rounded work hours in favor of the [hotel].”
