Groupon Commercial – Super Bowl Tibet Ad Prompts Controversy

Groupon Commercial - Super Bowl Tibet Ad Prompts Controversy

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Groupon’s Super Bowl commercial about Tibet immediately prompted controversy Sunday. Groupon’s Super Bowl ad was defended by the company’s Executive Andrew Mason as a “spoof”; but within minutes after its broadcast Sunday, Groupon drew outrage from viewers and news.

Groupon’s commercial featured Timothy Hutton. At the core of the controversy is the following line by Hutton sitting at a restaurant: “Mountainous Tibet – one of the most beautiful places in the world. This is Timothy Hutton. The people of Tibet are in trouble, their very culture in jeopardy. But they still whip up an amazing fish curry. And since 200 of us bought on Groupon.com we’re getting $30 worth of Tibetan food for just $15 at Himalayan restaurant in Chicago.”

As Scott Austin reported Sunday, Twitter lit up instantly with most tweets in outrage against the reference.

Just last week, Kenneth Cole drew backlash for his humorless reference to the crisis in Egypt to promote his own products. “Millions are in uproar in Cairo. Rumour is they heard our new spring collection is now available online …”

While Mason is defending his big budget Super Bowl commercial, Cole was quick to apologize for his single tweet. Cole later told news that  “In hindsight my attempt at humour regarding a nation liberating themselves against oppression was poorly timed and absolutely inappropriate.”

While news Monday is trying to determine what was the best Super Bowl ad of 2011, by all accounts so far, Groupon’s Tibet ad won’t be winning that distinction. As on comment on YouTube today notes, “As Tibet is over? 1,000 miles from the sea, Tibetans don’t really eat very much fish. Another reason why this ad [fails].”

Roger Staubach Helps Honor Super Bowl Winner Green Bay Packers

Roger Staubach Helps Honor Super Bowl Winner Green Bay Packers

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Roger Staubach last night both predicted the Green Bay Packers to win the Super Bowl and eventually helped honor them during the Vince Lombardi trophy ceremony. Roger Staubach was not alone in his predictions about Aaron Rogers taking Sunday’s Super Bowl. Virtually the entire FOX Sports News broadcast team predicted Green Bay to win.

In the end, Staubach handed over the trophy to Rodgers and company just as he predicted.

Before Sunday’s blazing game, Staubach said “I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the Steelers and the city of Pittsburgh.” He added “But the numbers don’t lie. The Lombardi Trophy is going back to TitleTown USA.”

After an initial lead in the first quarterback, Green Bay extended their lead to eleven. After halftime, FOX News told Super Bowl viewers one notable predictor; no NFL team has even come back from a ten point or more deficit at the half to win the Super Bowl.

Last night was no exception.

A single Vince Lombardi Trophy takes upwards of four moths to be crafted, following a design created by Tiffany and Co. Roger Staubach turned 69 on Saturday.

Christina Aguilera Messes up Super Bowl National Anthem Performance

Christina Aguilera Messes up Super Bowl Performance of National Anthem

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Christina Aguilera’s Super Bowl performance of the National Anthem got botched after Aguilera messed up the lyrics tonight. Christina Aguilera took to the stage at the Super Bowl with all smiles but left with a look of deep frustration. Minutes after leaving the stage, Aguilera was already dominating national news for messing up the lyrics during the NFL’s biggest telecast of the year.

Aguilera’s rendition of the National Anthem featured the pop singer changing many of the notes, clearly on purpose, sometimes excessively. But her rendition of the National Anthem featured her also changing some of the lyrics, clearly by accident.

The line messed up was ” ‘O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming”. The lyric was changed to “what so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last”, a version of a line previously sung.

Aguilera hit her notes, perfectly. But the lyric mess up was so noticeable that Aguilera backstage told staffers later that she didn’t want anyone around her, claims a source to Rob Shuter.

How have viewers reacted to the mess up? A Washington Post news poll of nearly 9,000 viewers resulted in seventy percent finding the error noticeable.

Nick Collins Delivers Super Bowl Interception for Green Bay

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Nick Collin’s stellar interception puts the Super Bowl score at 0-14, Steelers vs Packers, at the end of the first quarter. Nick Collins coupled with Howard Green’s move on Roethlisberger put Green Bay up by 14 at the end of the first quarter just moments after scoring from Packers’ Jordy Nelson.

First, with four minutes left in the quarter, Aaron Rodgers delivered a high pitched but sinking twenty-nine yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson. After Mason Crosby’s extra point kick, Green Bay was up seven points.

Roethlisberger had yet to find his rhythm in the first quarter. So when he returned to the field after the Nelson touchdown, Roethlisberger tried it again. But on first down, Ben got picked off.

His first pass got a move in the pocket from Howard Green. Green went for Roethlisberger’s shoulder pads; deep in the end zone, Roethlisberger delivered a short pass picked off by Nick Collins.

Collins followed up his interception with a stunning thirty seven yard interception run. Mason Crosby’s kick has put the Packers up by fourteen. While in the first quarter Roethlisberger has struggled, Aaron Rodgers so far is six for ten on passing with eighty seven yards.

NFL Playoffs Schedule 2011 – NFL Games Today Heat Up

NFL Playoffs Schedule 2011 - NFL Games Today Heat Up

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Your NFL Playoffs schedule of games is underway today. NFL games this weekend just begun with the Ravens vs. Steelers showdown now in the first quarter. The Packers vs. Falcons game is at 8 pm EST today. Tomorrow it’s Pete Carroll’s Seahawks vs. Bears at 1 pm EST followed by the Jets vs. Patriots at 4:30 pm EST.

Making news also this weekend are NFL warnings to players and teams about verbalized threats. NFL rep Greg Aiello in a tweet Saturday issued a news statement to “confirm what’s being reported.” Aiello told news that “Ray Anderson contacted multiple clubs this week so they could remind players comments of a physically threatening nature are always taken into account in evaluating discipline for illegal physical contact on field.”

The NFL would not be specific as to which threat prompted warning.s

When asked to further clarify from Darrel Rovell, Aiello said the “issue is physical threats related to on-field conduct.” Others were critical of the NFL decision today. Aiello defended against one tweet stating  “You already fine them for questionable hits. Now for questionable words. Next is fine them for questionable thoughts.”

But is trash talking bad for the NFL or good? In truth, Antonio Cromartie and Tom Brady’s bickering remained headline news for three days this week. “Note to the NFL: Trash talking is great for your brand. It’s worth millions of dollars in attention” Rovell remarked to Aiello. In fact, Cromartie doesn’t believe what he said was wrong.

So what did prompt the NFL warnings? While Aiello would not elaborate, the possible threat this week was Bart Scott’s comments about Welker’s foot interview, telling Newsday “I’ll tell you what. Be very careful what you say about our coach. His [Welker's] days in a uniform will be numbered. Put it like that.”
