Sergio Vega Assassination – Few Answers in the Death of El Shaka

Sergio Vega's Assassination - Few Answers in the Death of El Shaka

SONORA (LALATE) – Sergio Vega El Shaka’s body arrived home tonight. Yet despite the death of Sergio Vega, and headlines reading “ fue asesinado”, “El Shaka muere”, fans know little more Monday why El Shaka was murdered.

Initially some local news were unwilling to call the assassination a murder, some reporting it was a random theft attempt of a Cadillac. That of course was not the case.

On Sunday, Banda La Carbonera honored El Shaka in a funeral procession. Carlos Vega told attendees “He said that when I die, bury it with the band.” Banda La Carbonera was joined by Banda Triguera and Fredy Vega as they played El Shaka’s favorite hits. Fans in the thousands showed up to honor this beloved cantante of musica grupera.

Ana Luisa Vega said “The Shaka Shaka will be alive with music.” In the end, El Shaka’s body arrived at the Multipurpose Center in Ciudad Obregon for a public wake. La Carbonera performed the song Vega said he wanted to die to  “When the sun comes out backwards.”

Singer Diana Reyes said of El Shaka “Today my heart has feelings. We was a great artist and look forward to great success. How sad. RIP Sergio Vega. No one deserves death, God rest his glory. ”

Tito El Bambino said Sunday “They are very delicate and unfortunate situations, it is a shame that is happening with our colleagues. Yes I had the opportunity to meet your music and know who he was, is a big loss.”

By Monday, local press contend the El Shaka’s killing was a directed hit by a gang cartel. Yet, fans have no answers why the cartel murdered El Shaka, and why over a dozen singers have died in cartel hits in less than 36 months. It remains one of the most unanswered questions of music today.

Singer Carlos Ocaranza was murdered in August last year following a concert in Guadalajara. His relative, Valentin Elizalde, was murdered in November 2006 in Reynosa. In 2008, the publicist for Jesus Elizalde, Roberto Ignacio del Fierro Lugo, was murdered in  Guadalajara section of Zapopan. And in December 2007, Sergio Gomez of K-PAZ de la Sierra was murdered and that same year Zayda Peña Arjona also perished.

Sergio Vega Murder Plot Chased El Shaka

Sergio Vega Murder Plot Chased El Shaka

SONORA (LALATE) – Sergio Vega was chased down in a murder hit on El Shaka, now says police. Sergio Vegas’ death, headlined as “a muerte del cantante grupero” and “una nueva tragedia” across Mexico press today, is updated Monday with reports that Vega’s assistant tried to save his life.

El Shaka tried to flee his pursuing assassins, confirms local news Monday.

Despite initial inconsistencies, local news are now confirming that at 9:40 PM PST Saturday El Shaka was on US Mexico Highway 15 International. Sergio was en route to the Pacific Tour. Vega was driving his Sonora-licensed plate bright red Cadillac sedan. His passenger was his translator assistant.

Vega just after 9:30 PM was approaching the San Miguel toll booth on Highway 15 within the Ahome Township of Sonora. Vega was traveling south.

At this point, news reports are unclear as to what initially transpired. Most reports now indicate a “group” in a “van” began shooting at Vega at the wheel. Reports don’t indicate if the van was stationed on Route 15 or following. Some reports say it may have tried to block the Cadillac.

New reports Monday now say that Vega was hit during the initial gunshots, but still alive. His assistant is said to have tried to save his life in the next moments.

Shot at but believed still alive, Vega crashed off Highway 15. Vega went as far as 30 meters off the road.

At this point, news Monday confirms that the attackers came up to Vega’s car and “finished him off”. El Shaka suffered wounds in the head and chest in a grassy area called the Barobampo Hills in the El Carrizo community.

Reports say Vega crashed into a light poll. But crash photos of the Cadillac show a rear collision impact, leaving questions if his car spun or if he was rammed by the truck from behind.

Today, Sergio’s body – following a public wake and funeral procession – was taken to ranch Aguacaliente, heading to Hornos, Sonora.

Sergio Vega El Shaka Memorial Continues – Murder Leaves Questions

Sergio Vega El Shaka Memorial Continues - Murder Leaves Questions

SONORA (LALATE) – Death photos of Sergio Vega El Shaka cover Mexican papers today. El Shaka’s memorial continues Monday as fans ask why El Shaka “fue asesinado” (was murdered), with papers left guessing “fueron asesinos a sueldo o simples ladrones” (was this a targeted murder or the result of simple thieves).

As reported since Sunday on LALATE, news reports continue their inconsistency on the details of the attack while questions about his murder remain unanswered. On Sunday, reports said that El Shaka was gunned down while driving his Cadillac to an approaching toll booth on US Mexico Highway 15. Now today yet again reports that he was not gunned down, but “chased” by a van first. Reports now claim that a van tried to stop Vega in his Cadillac sedan; one even claims the van tried to block Vega. Press ask whether the object of pursuit was the bright red Cadillac (which was not stolen following the attack) or Vega himself.

Vega sang about his death many times. In one of his narcocorridos  he laments “I know you want to kill me”. Another lyric reads “I know you want to kill me or get me imprisoned, they know they have to risk to meet the leather, for I bring good pistorlas, I never have a numb finger. ”

Countless Latin singers have taken to stage, Twitter, and Facebook to honor their fallen cantante. The beloved Tito El Bambino took to the stage this weekend and said “They are very delicate and unfortunate situations, it is a shame that is happening with our colleagues. Yes I had the opportunity to meet your music and know who he was, is a big loss.”

On Sunday, LALATE showed an image of Vega’s remains being taken through the fields off Route 15 following his car crash. Click HERE for that image.

In NoroEste newspaper today, images of Vega’s Cadillac are shown.   The vehicle has a massive dent in the rear. Some reports claim Vega was pursued by a van. It remains unclear if the van smashed the rear of the Cadillac.

In Nuevo Dia, an image (located here) of Sergio Vega during his funeral procession appears on Monday’s front cover with the title “The Mourning of Sergio Vega”. Vega appeared in an open casket during a public funeral procession and wake Sunday.

Initial reports had said that El Shake had been “riddled” with 30 bullets to the face. Those reports appear to have been false. The picture  from the wake does not show that to be true. Moreover, police said only 4 shell casings were found.  Vega is said to have died from a shot to throat, head, and eye.

For the wake, Vega was dressed in his favorite color, blue. He wore a blue suit, blue tie, and boots and was at peace in a wooden box.

Vega was honored Saturday with a funeral procession with armed guards from Navojoa to Los Mochis, Sinaloa. He was joined his touring band, La Banda La Carbonera, played his beloved ballads as fans mourned the streets of Mexico.

Vega was moved by carriage, coming to Esperanza, Sonora. The funeral home Robles Funeral Company of Esperanza was unable to handle all the people; as a result, a tribute was held at Alvaro Obregon square that continues today in front of the town’s City Hall.

Vega’s remains will travel 8 miles to his home in Horn’s ranch Monday for a private ceremony.

Sergio Vega Funeral Remembers El Shaka – Murder Unsolved

Sergio Vega Funeral Remembers El Shaka - Murder Unsolved

SONORA (LALATE) – Fans remembered Sergio Vega El Shaka during a funeral procession today. Headlines “Vega fue asesinado”, “El Shaka muere”, and “matan a Sergio” lined local papers as thousands turned out Sunday afternoon to honor a beloved talent.

At 3 pm PST Sunday, fans turned out as the murdered body of the cantante of musica grupera, Sergio Vega, “El Shaka”, was driven through the street of Esperanza, Sonora, Mexico. Sergio Vega was driven by a horse-drawn carriage for a public wake. The funeral processing was handled by Robles Funeral Company of Esperanza of the municipality of Obregon in Sonora.

Fans lined the street, many in tears, others shouting and clapping, and countless singing his beloved songs, reports local news. Vega was dressed in his favorite color, blue. He wore a blue suit, blue tie, and boots and was at peace in a wooden box.

Today’s public funeral procession will finish with a private ceremony for friends and family in native Horn, north of Obregon, confirms a family rep Sunday.

Just hours before his death, El Shaka had to inform website La Oreja Entertainment that rumors of his murder were false. Vega added that any such news of his death could be exceptionally harmful to his mother who suffers from a heart condition. Vega said this weekend: “That happened to me years ago, someone told a radio station or newspaper I have killed, or who had suffered an accident. And then I had to call my dear mother, who has heart problems, to reassure her”.

Local police have now deemed the Vega murder a gang directed attack. It follows over half a dozen other murders against cantantes in just the last 36 months. Fans of the regional Banda music, popular not just in area but also in Mexico and especially Los Angeles, have taken to Facebook and Twitter Sunday to denounce the violence.

Mr. Vega recently had increased his securoty following the murder of Sergio Gomez of Banda K-Paz de La Sierra in 2007. Gomez was abducted that year at a concert in Michoacan at which Vega also performed. Gomez would be found days later dead of strangulation.

Yet despite Vega’s indication he had increased security, LALATE confirmed earlier that Vega was murdered as the driver of his Sonora-registered Cadillac with only one other passenger on board. As indicated throughout Sunday on LALATE, reports have conflicted about the murder details. Some local news reports claimed 30 bullets were fired at Vega, while police have confirmed only 4 shell casing were found at Vegas’ drivers side. Some reports erroneously claim El Shaka was chased by attackers from another car.

Rather, Vega was murdered Saturday night at 9:30 PM PST while approaching an upcoming toll booth at San Miguel (La Caseta de San Miguel) on US Mexico Highway 15. Vega is believed to have died instantly, shots to both throat, head and eye. His Cadillac immediately went of the road crashing.

Sergio Vega El Shaka Death – Memorial Planned, Hunt for Murderers

Sergio Vega El Shaka Death - Hunt for Murderers, Memorial Planned

SONORA (LALATE) – UPDATE. The shooting death of Sergio Vega El Shaka is resulting in conflicting reports. El Shaka’s “asesinado”, “muerte al cantante grupero” reads Mexican news Sunday, while friends like Jenni Rivera have taken to Twitter to remember El Shaka. Rivera tweets Sunday “Siento mucho la muerte del ´Shaka´.”

As of 3 PM Sunday, memorials are being planned to remember El Shaka while the hunt for his murderers is underway.

Above is believed the first death photo of El Shaka. Initial reports before sunrise Sunday said that Vega was shot north of toll booth. By early morning, those reports were revised, with investigators claiming that El Shaka was ambushed inside the toll booth. But now late Sunday new reports claim Sergio Vega suffered a series of fatal gun shots while driving, approaching the toll booth, resulting in his vehicle crashing off the road.

Moreover, earlier today, one report Sunday said Vega took thirty bullets near the San Miguel toll booth. Late today, investigators are claiming to have found four 9 mm caliber shell gun casings on the driver’s door.

Additionally, one report said that the Vega was “chased” in his vehicle before being shot. Yet most reports confirm that to be incorrect. Sergio Vega is said to have died instantly from the shooting, his vehicle crashing 30 meters off the highway. El Shaka is said to have taken at least one bullet to the throat region, one to the head and through the left eye.

Vegas was on the US Mexican highway heading for Alhuey in Angostura.  His companion in the vehicle, a translator assistant, has been identified as Montiel Ávila. Avila was not seriously injured.

Singer Diana Reyes remembered El Shaka with the following statement Sunday. “Today my heart has feelings. We was a great artist and look forward to great success. How sad. RIP Sergio Vega. No one deserves death, God rest his glory. ”

Other famed singers who have died in murders this decade include Valentin Elizalde “El Gallo de Oro” (November 25, 2006, Reynosa, Tamaulipas); Sergio Gomez, K-Paz de la Sierra (December 3, 2007); and Zayda Pena (Matamoros, Tamaulipas).

Memorials for Vega are planned in Ciudad Obregon, while Banda La Carbonera is considering a tribute concert.
