SONORA (LALATE) – Sergio Vega was chased down in a murder hit on El Shaka, now says police. Sergio Vegas’ death, headlined as “a muerte del cantante grupero” and “una nueva tragedia” across Mexico press today, is updated Monday with reports that Vega’s assistant tried to save his life.
El Shaka tried to flee his pursuing assassins, confirms local news Monday.
Despite initial inconsistencies, local news are now confirming that at 9:40 PM PST Saturday El Shaka was on US Mexico Highway 15 International. Sergio was en route to the Pacific Tour. Vega was driving his Sonora-licensed plate bright red Cadillac sedan. His passenger was his translator assistant.
Vega just after 9:30 PM was approaching the San Miguel toll booth on Highway 15 within the Ahome Township of Sonora. Vega was traveling south.
At this point, news reports are unclear as to what initially transpired. Most reports now indicate a “group” in a “van” began shooting at Vega at the wheel. Reports don’t indicate if the van was stationed on Route 15 or following. Some reports say it may have tried to block the Cadillac.
New reports Monday now say that Vega was hit during the initial gunshots, but still alive. His assistant is said to have tried to save his life in the next moments.
Shot at but believed still alive, Vega crashed off Highway 15. Vega went as far as 30 meters off the road.
At this point, news Monday confirms that the attackers came up to Vega’s car and “finished him off”. El Shaka suffered wounds in the head and chest in a grassy area called the Barobampo Hills in the El Carrizo community.
Reports say Vega crashed into a light poll. But crash photos of the Cadillac show a rear collision impact, leaving questions if his car spun or if he was rammed by the truck from behind.
Today, Sergio’s body – following a public wake and funeral procession – was taken to ranch Aguacaliente, heading to Hornos, Sonora.
