Silk Road Shut Down Deep Internet Website by Ross William Ulbricht

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Silk Road is shut down and Ross William Ulbricht aka Dread Pirate Roberts (photo above), the site’s alleged owner, is in custody. Silk Road was shut down by Federal agents pursuant to a search warrant earlier early today. A raid was effectuated. And Ross William Ulbricht (screename Dread Pirate Roberts) was taken into custody. While Ulbricht was in San Francisco when he was arrested, the servers for Silk Road are reportedly in a foreign country.

Ulbricht made millions, prosecutors claimed. With the Silk Road shut down, authorities stopped a website that was reportedly making 9.5 million Bitcoins and roughly $1.2 billion in sales annually. Feds called Silk Road “the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet today”.

But where was Silk Road? The University of Texas graduate reportedly placed the website on the “deep internet”, put it unsearchable by indexes, and required it to be viewable only with a specific browser. And while he kept a secret who is Dread Pirate Roberts, his personal social media footprint was large. He had a YouTube called “How To Get Away With Stealing”.

“Based on my training and experience, Silk Road has emerged as the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet today,” FBI Special Agent Christopher Tarbell said in the complaint. Ulbricht was ultimately arrested at the Glen Park branch of the San Francisco Public Library yesterday afternoon.

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Dread Pirate Roberts (Ross William Ulbricht) has been arrested, the alleged owner of Silk Road. A government raid today October 2, 2013 was carried out as well. Officials tell news that the $3.6 million in Bitcoin has been seized. Ross William Ulbricht is due in federal court in San Francisco later today. There are several social media account including Facebook and Google + that show pictures of a person by the same name. It remains unclear if that person is in fact Silk Road’s Ulbricht.

Ulbricht has been charged with narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy. The company was allegedly been shut down today as well. Officials with the Department of Justice have filed criminal and civil complaints against Ulbricht.

Officials tell news that Silk Road existed on the “Deep Web” which allegedly is not indexed by search engines. Time.com claims that the Deep Web is only accessible through a special browser called Tor. Bitcoin was the digital currently at issue. Officials claim that today’s seizure is the biggest ever for Bitcoin.

Christopher Tarbell, an FBI agent, allegedly headed the investigation. Agents reportedly made more than one hundred transactions over the last three years. They claim that Silk Road made $1.2 billion in earnings in two years and that Roberts personally made $79.8 million. Officials claim the company has roughly one million users than had roughly one million transactions in two years.
