Rodney King Not Dead – Troy Davis Debate Prompts Confusion

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – History is being rewritten online today, for the wrong reasons. The life of Rodney King have been butchered in reports by persons trying to compare the Troy Davis murder case to the Rodney King matter. Tonight, Troy Davis’ execution time was set for 7 pm EST. Troy Davis’ execution didn’t happen. The U.S. Supreme Court, when presented with a final appeal by Davis’ attorneys, issued an emergency halt of the execution to review the appeal.
As a nation feared we were killing the wrong person tonight in the Davis case, the net attempted to kill off Rodney King at the same time. Several people around 5 pm PST tonight reported online that the Troy Davis case is like the Rodney King “case” because “four cops killed Rodney King” and they “got away with it”. Rodney King was never killed by four cops and the City of Los Angeles didn’t get away with anything.
“Are y’all forgetting Rodney King? He got killed by FOUR police officers” read the original King “death” tweet. The cops didn’t kill King, and the City ended up paying King $3.8 million in his civil dispute.
Over one hundred fourteen tweets are being posted approximately every two minutes on Twitter tonight furious about the subject. Most are furious that Americans have become so uneducated about our history to forget even events of the last thirty years.
“I’m waiting to see ONE tweet about Casey Anthony, Rodney King, Obama, or anyone else for that matter that is relevant to Troy Davis” wrote one furious reader. “Why am I seeing so many tweets about the cops killing Rodney King? They didn’t kill him.” Another added “Now did that child just say Rodney King got killed?” In short, one reader said it best, writing “Our education system has failed when people saying Rodney King was killed by 4 officers with footage.”
Rodney King is set to marry juror Cynthia Kelley. Cynthia Kelley is best known as juror number 5 in a certain notable trial – King’s own civil dispute. For nearly two decades, Cynthia Kelley and Rodney King had kept their relationship secret. The couple revealed in December that their first date was just hours after Kelley and her jury awarded King $3.8 million. Kelly says she joined King and his attorney for pizza in Newport Beach the day after the trial was over.
