Letterman’s wedding to Regina Lasko was detailed by the talk show host on air earlier this spring. Now this winter Letterman is detailing his grand jury testimony about affairs with female staffers.

Is it too much on air information?

Don Imus has had enough of it. Imus this morning called Letterman a punk. Imus called Letterman “an angry, mean spirited” guy. “I’ve always thought he was a creek anyway. He’s a punk. Fundamentally if you are married or you have a commitment you should that. I’m not stupid and I know some people don’t but that what I do and what people should do”.

Robert Joe Halderman’s attorney, Gerald Shargel, also went on the media attack against Letterman today. He said the charges are false. “[They are] so obviously out of character to the point of not making any sense.” Halderman has pleaded not guilty.

Letterman’s apology reportedly included the following:

“I’m terribly sorry that I put the staff in that position. Inadvertently, I just wasn’t thinking ahead. And, moreover, the staff here has been wonderfully supportive to me, not just through this furor, but through all the years that we’ve been on television and especially all the years here at CBS, so, again, my thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I’ve gotten myself involved in.

“Now the other thing is my wife, Regina. She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it. And at that point, there’s only two things that can happen: either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.”

PHOTOS! Here again are pics an an update about Stephanie Birkitt, the David Letterman staffer and past reported love interest. Stephanie Birkitt was Vicky on the Letterman’s Late Show, a job along with 48 Hours she held at CBS. Birkitt says of her Letterman job:

“I did my internship in the spring of 1996, returned to school for one more year, and graduated in 1997. Following graduation I moved to New York and worked at CBS News “48 Hours” then eventually ended up at the “Late Show” again.”

48 Hours is where Robert Halderman, credited as Joe Halderman, worked as a winning segment producer. Halderman entered a no guilty plea in Letterman $2 million alleged extortion case Friday. Halderman is home now, free on $200,000 bail.

On air, Birkitt would appear to Late Show viewers as “Vicky” often named “Smitty,” “Kitty,” “Monty,” “Gunter,” and “Dutch.” In 2002, Birkitt would even cover the Winter Olympics.

Thursday night, David Letterman told a studio audience that he had relations with a female member of his staff.

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life. I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

On having relations with a female member, Letterman said:

“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people. I need to certainly protect my family.”

In a recent interview, Stephanie Birkitt said her segments with Letterman are natural:

“My on-air calls with Dave however, are unrehearsed and just natural conversation between the two of us.”

On Letterman, she says the following:

“I do have a great deal of fun with all of the opportunities and experiences this job affords me. Working for Dave is great though. Aside from being incredibly funny and personable he is generous, kind, and is great fun to play catch with. I really couldn’t ask for a more fun work environment. Dave is truly the greatest boss I could ever have.”

Birkitt’s interview explains how she got the job:

I am an assistant to David Letterman. I got this job following a college internship in the writers’ department at the show. I did my internship in the spring of 1996, returned to school for one more year, and graduated in 1997. Following graduation I moved to New York and worked at CBS News “48 Hours” then eventually ended up at the “Late Show” again. I never lost my interest in the show and was consequently thrilled at the opportunity to work there.

I would say that the reason I enjoy my work is two-fold. For one thing the people I work with make the environment very familial. We all get along great and everyone really enjoys each other. The other thing which makes work ever-exciting is the fact that no two days are ever alike. You come to work each morning really never knowing what will happen next. Some days we all go to the movies, other days I find myself dressed in costumes or making reports on snowfall up on the roof. Things are never monotonous. I truly have a wonderfully crazy job.

Daivd Letterman confessed an affair to CBS viewers on Thursday night. Thereafter, reports identified the arrested individual as a CBS employee, an award winning producer Robert (credited as “Joe”) Halderman from the investigative show 48 Hours.

Now today the New York District Attorney has confirmed Halderman’s arrest.

“The defendant Robert Joel Halderman, a.k.a. Joe Halderman, [who] is 51 years old of Norwalk, CT, was indicted on an attempted grand larceny charge. The crimes charged in the indictment occurred between September 9th and September 30th of 2009.

“The investigation leading to today’s indictment reveal[s] that Halderman waited outside Letterman’s Manhattan home at 6 a.m. on September 9th to deliver a letter and other materials to him as he was leaving for work.

“Halderman wrote that he needed to ‘make a large chunk of money’ by selling Letterman a so-called ’screenplay treatment.’ The one page screenplay treatment attached to the letter referred to Mr. Letterman’s great professional success and … his ‘beautiful and loving son.’ The document then related that Mr. Letterman’s ‘world is about to collapse around him’ as information about his private life is disclosed leading to a ‘ruined reputation’ and severe damage to his professional and family lives.

“The package contained other materials supporting the screenplay treatment and directed Mr. Letterman to call him by 8 a.m. to make a deal. Mr. Letterman immediately contacted his attorney, who arranged an initial meeting with Halderman. During this initial meeting, Halderman demanded to be paid 2 million dollars to avoid the disclosure of the private information in his so-called screenplay treatment…..A search warrant was executed in Connecticut yesterday and the investigation is continuing.”

CBS 48 Hours producer Joe Halderman has been arrested in the David Letterman alleged extortion case says reports. Joe Halderman aka Robert Halderman alleged statements about David Letterman now married to Regina Lasko (photos below) come as a shock to CBS viewers.

Tonight, Letterman told a CBS studio audience about the alleged extortion. Letterman did not mention Haldmerman nor 48 Hours. CBS tonight confirms an arrest of a producer from 48 hours, who has been suspended, but doesn’t name the person.

CBS 48 Hours producer Joe Halderman is the individual, claims AP.

48 Hours’ “The Amanda Knox Story” was produced by Joe Halderman. So was “Hostage” in 2004 for which he wont an Emmy. Peter Van Sant would serve as correspondent on Halderman produced segments for the CBS Investigation show.

Tonight Letterman told a studio audience he had relations with a female staff member.

Letterman told his audience tonight “I have a little story that I’d like to tell you and the home viewers as well.” He said he found a package IN his car three weeks ago that included a letter which said “I know that you do some terrible, terrible things and that I can prove you do some terrible things.” Letterman said the letter included proof of the affair.

Letterman told his audience that Thursday he revealed the details to a grand jury.

“I was worried for myself, I was worried for my family. I felt menaced by this, and I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done.”

“The creepy stuff was that I have had [relations] with women who work for me on this show. My response to that is yes, I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Yes, it would, especially for the women.”

“It’s been a very bizarre experience. I felt like I needed to protect these people. I need to protect my family. I need to protect myself. Hope to protect my job.”
