America’s Nastia Luskin beat out Shawn Johnson to win the gold medal Friday afternoon in Beijing. Luskin’s father Valeri had tried to, but not been able to, take Olympic gold himself as kid 20 years before.
Shawn Johnson took silver, Yang Yilin of China took Bronze.
“I knew that I had to go out there and do a normal routine,” she said. “That is what my dad kept saying: ‘Don’t do anything better than you know how to do it. Just do it normal.’”
“It makes it so sweet knowing that I’ve been through so much with injuries and doubters,” she said. “But it made me stronger and made me the person I am today. It’s been a long journey, but it’s been worth it.”
Her dad said of Nastia’s win:“We have worked so hard for this, and it finally paid off. She she’s a tiger inside. I did strongly believe that it would pay off, and it did pay off in a big way.”
Johnson said of Nastia’s win “I gave my heart and soul to the competition today. Nastia has been around awhile. She has a lot of experienced, and she deserved the gold today.”
