LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Nuestra Belleza Latina 2013 ganadora Marisela Demontecristo made history en vivo on Univision last night. After an evening of surprises with Audris Rijo, and fans asking “quién será la ganadora de Nuestra belleza latina”, Univision told news that Marisela Demontecristo had won Nuestra Belleza Latina 2013. In doing so, Marisela became the first winner ever from El Salvador.
The growth of the Nuestra Belleza Latina in U.S. TV markets has memorized ratings analysts for years. Its dominance of Sunday night programming in U.S. major markets continued to grow this year. But even two years ago, Nuestra Belleza Latina was the number one most watched TV program on Sunday nights in major sections of southeast Florida, across all demographics. Here in Los Angeles, Nuestra Belleza Latina would finish often first in the key 18-49 demographic.
Several years ago, LALATE reported that Nuestra Belleza Latina was one of the earliest examples that Spanish-language program aired domestically in the U.S. could beat out major TV network programming – from ABC, NBC, and CBS – in U.S. domestic markets. Now years later, several production companies, known solely for English language programming, are moving into the Spanish language market. Among them are Ryan Seacrest, who signed a major deal this spring.
Marisela Demontecristo made news last night breaking a trend by Mexico and Puerto Rico in winning the competition. Both nations had two previous wins. And last night, both countries were trying for their record third win.
Nuestra Belleza Latina also permeated social media last night more than ever before, LALATE can report. With the hashtag #NBL, the broadcast was confronted with a series of leaks about a possible Marisela win looming.
Part of the tensions came last night as Audris Rijo was down to the final two. Audris Rijo had been rocked by a leaked photos scandal this year. In previous years, the show had eliminated one contestant when such a scandal erupted. But this year, the “accidental” scandal proved too effective for ratings. The show kept Audris Rijo in the program. Eventually, Audris Rijo finished second, and Viviana Ortiz finished third.
