MEXICO CITY (LALATE) – La Barbie fue detenida hoy. El líder del cártel de los Beltrán Leyva, La Barbie (Edgar Valdez Villarreal), fue detenido hoy en México.

La Barbie was in charge of the Beltran Leyva after the death of Arturo Beltran, El Barbas. La Barbie had a history with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. El Barbie had escaped numerous times. His arrest is believed to have been in Lerma on Monday, reports the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública (SSP) today. Detainees with La Barbie are set to be presented in Mexico City Tuesday.

Only 14 days ago, Policía Federal raided the habitacional en Bosques de las Lomas believing that La Barbie was there.

On Twitter today, President Felipe Calderón said La Barbie is “uno de los criminales más buscados en México y en el extranjero”. “La Barbie is one of the most wanted criminals in Mexico and aboard.” He noted that the group is still being investigated.

Martin Cuellar, Webb County, Texas sheriff, first found out that La Barbie was south of the border a few years after his senior year in high school. He said La Barbie’s first job was distribution and substance transport with money handling between Texas and Mexico.

Tonight, la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública (SSP) issued the following brief statement: “Tras un trabajo de inteligencia que inició en junio de 2009, y se desarrolló en diversos puntos del país, Valdez Villarreal fue detenido”. “Following intelligence work began in June 2009 and developed in various parts of the country, Valdez Villarreal was arrested.”
