Geno Smith Fires Agent, Furious about 2 Round

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Geno Smith has fired his agent Select Sports Group. Reportedly Geno Smith fired his agent because he was furious about his second round draft pick. He feels that he did not get the type of response nor the type of money he believed he was owed last week.

A first round pick under the new NFL CBA gives a player a minimum $6.7 million salary with roughly $5.4 million guaranteed. But now, in a the second round, Geno Smith doesn’t have much room to negotiate salary increases. A change of his agent won’t improve Smith’s salary level under the draft. News reports claim that Smith almost refused to return to Radio City Musical Hall for the second round of the draft, furious with his agents after the first round results on Thursday.

Smith nor the agent would address the report by Sports Business Journal directly. But Smith said he was unhappy with his draft result He told NFL Sirius today “I’m not bitter about where I was selected, because I’m on a great team and I’m in a great position.”

He also told news “I don’t want to shed too much light on it. The thing that I can tell you is that it’s not because of the whole draft experience. It’s not because of one particular incident. There’s a number of things.” He added “And that story, you know, that battle will be fought on a different day. As of right now, I don’t feel too comfortable talking about all the details of it.

Smith further told news today “First and foremost, I want to make it known that I was never bitter about where I was selected because it’s a great selection. Whether it was number one or the last pick, I was coming in with the right mentality, and that’s to get better and compete daily. I’m extremely ecstatic to be a part of the Jets organization.”

Tim Tebow Released by Jets, Free Agent Seeks Deal

Tim Tebow Released by Jets, Free Agent Seeks Deal

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Tim Tebow has been released by the Jets. Tim Tebow was released the New York Jets this morning April 29, 2013. The Jets will not be trading Tebow nor renewing his contract. So with Tim Tebow a free agent, where Tebow be signed next?

The releasing of Tebow by the Jets follows weeks of critical comments by news of the Jets’ organization. Joe Namath told news recently that Rex Ryan, in his opinion, took advantage of Tebow. “We can go right to the Tebow thing. I mean, come on,” Namath told news “If you’re bringing him in to play, where’s he been? Are you bringing him [in] to make other people practice longer? Are you bringing him in trying to get media headlines?”

Namath while praising NFL Draft picks by the Jets has been critical of the team’s trade moves. “And I don’t know who’s picking the players we bring in [here].”

Today’s Tebow news confirms an ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports weeks ago. Mortensen recently said that the Jets will not trade Tebow but simply release him. Jaguars owner Shad Khan previously told news after the Broncos’ signing of Peyton Manning that he was interested in Tebow. But he stayed with Blaine Gabbert at quarterback.

For now, Jets fans are still critical of the team’s front office for giving up so much for Tebow. The Jets gave up a “fourth- and sixth-round draft choices to Denver and received a seventh-rounder in return from the Broncos when Tebow chose New York”, ESPN reminds fans. “The Broncos also agreed to pay the Jets $2.53 million, or about half of what had been advanced to Tebow.”

Darrelle Revis Trade Rumors Strike Jets, Rex Ryan

Darrelle Revis Trade Rumors Strike Jets

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Darrelle Revis trade rumors have struck the Jets this week. And Revis tells news today that the rumors left him surprised and angry.

Darrelle Revis indicated to news earlier today that he was speechless about the rumors. “I’m speechless by far”. Yet he also told news that he was angry by what was transpiring, very quickly, from Woody Johnson. He added “more importantly I feel more upset for the Jets nation for having to go through this!” For now he added “I guess we’ll see how this plays out. “

Ted Sundquist told ESPN this month that he thinks Woody Johnson could trade Revis, but that Rex Ryan wants to keep Revis. “I think Mr. Johnson realizes there are weaknesses and deficiencies there.” He added “He was adamant about how the players love Rex, their connection with him. But then he was like, ‘That said … ‘ — and he listed X, Y and Z, the things Rex needs to improve upon.”

But Albert Breer and Jason La Canfora report this week that Johnson is considering lots of options for Revis. And while Breer is not particularly clear what Johnson might do with Revis, insiders tell La Canfora that Johnson “would like to pursue a means to reap rewards for Revis now”, whatever those might be.

Jets Fire Mike Tannenbaun, Keep Rex Ryan

Jets Fire Mike Tannenbaun, Keep Rex Ryan

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – The Jets have fired Mike Tannenbaun and kept Rex Ryan in a news statement today. The Jets were expected to fire Rex Ryan in NFL Black Monday 2012 predictions. But moments ago, they announced they would keep Ryan but fire Mike Tannenbaun.

Jets fans have watched a dreadful season unfold this fall, and a loss of an NFL Draft pick for Tim Tebow. Rex Ryan stood behind Mark Sanchez all season long as Sanchez’s numbers got worse. And Ryan continued to not use ebow on the field.

Earlier this fall, Ryan told news “I just know in my heart, right now, that this is not the time.” He added “I think Tim is an outstanding player and I think Mark is. Right now, I think Mark gives us our best opportunity to win.”

Even Bill Belichick found issue with Ryan’s non-use of Tebow. “He’s a good runner, he’s a strong runner, very strong.”

Joe Namath was also critical of Ryan’s handling of the Tebow situation. “We can go right to the Tebow thing. I mean, come on,” Namath told news “If you’re bringing him in to play, where’s he been? Are you bringing him [in] to make other people practice longer? Are you bringing him in trying to get media headlines?” For other NFL Black Monday firings click HERE.

NFL Black Monday 2012 Predictions Target Rex Ryan, Dennis Allen

NFL Black Monday 2012 Predictions Target Rex Ryan, Dennis Allen

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – NFL Black Monday 2012 predictions are targeting Rex Ryan and Dennis Allen. NFL Black Monday describes the first Monday each year following the end of the NFL regular season. For coaches of teams not heading to the playoffs, the Monday is filled with news of firings.

Initial predictions for NFL Black Monday 2012 feature anticipation that the 4-11 Oakland Raiders will fire Dennis Allen. More problematic, however, are predictions about the Jets and Rex Ryan.

For the Raiders, another season means another coach. Lane Kiffin led the team for two seasons before his exit resulted in a major legal dispute. Then it was the dramatic exit of Tom Cable that prompted more legal troubles. In 2011, the Raiders proclaimed a new era with Hue Jackson. On January 5, 2011 LALATE reported news that Jackson appeared to be the frontrunner to replace Cable. Ironically just months earlier, Lane Kiffin lost his grievance dispute against the Raiders for his 2008 firing. But after one season, Jackson was out. Now the same could be the case with Dennis Allen.

Rex Ryan’s future with the Jets seem in question as well. The Jets gave up a “fourth- and sixth-round draft choices to Denver and received a seventh-rounder in return from the Broncos when Tebow chose New York”, ESPN reminded fans this week. “The Broncos also agreed to pay the Jets $2.53 million, or about half of what had been advanced to Tebow.” Ryan stayed with Mark Sanchez all season long despite Sanchez’s deteriorating numbers at quarterback.

Tim Tebow Quitter Claims, Greg McElroy Concussion, Strike Rex Ryan

Tim Tebow Quitter Claims, Greg McElroy Concussion, Strike Rex Ryan

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – Tim Tebow is being called a quitter, Greg McElroy has a concussion, and Mark Sanchez will start Sunday in yet another eventful Thursday for the Jets. Tim Tebow says he is not a quitter, but Sanchez is happy to back being the Jets’ starter this weekend. Rex Ryan, however, doesn’t want to elaborate more about the controversy.

For Sunday’s Bills game, Rex Ryan has selected Sanchez to start for the injured Greg McElroy. “When I look at it, you only have two practices left, you have one walk-through and the fact that Mark had some success early in the year against them … I think without question this is the right decision, to start Mark,” Ryan told news today. “He knows Buffalo and I think it’s the right decision.”

On Wednesday, reports surfaced that Tebow allegedly told Ryan to taken out of Wildcat packages after McElroy was given the starting position. Tebow told news “I never said, ‘Hey, I don’t want to do anything. I won’t do anything,’ ” He added “That wasn’t the talk at all. He knows that. And everybody on this team knows that I would never not do something if I was asked. That’s what’s disappointing. . . . People saying, ‘Oh, you quit.’ That was not it at all. It was just me asking to get an opportunity to play the position I love, which is quarterback. It wasn’t me asking out of anything.”

Ryan was asked about Tebow allegations today. Ryan would not reply. “I’m comfortable with my answer. Maybe nobody else is, but I am. Ill leave it at that.”

Ryan did tell news today that Tebow is unhappy. “Is he disappointed about not starting this game? Absolutely. But in my opinion, Tim will do whatever is asked of him.” He added “I can definitely understand the frustrations of not getting the opportunity to play as much as I’m sure he would’ve liked, the fact our team has struggled. I’m sure there are a lot of frustrations now.”
