One ad uses the title “Mind-Blowingly Inappropriate.” That phrase comes from the Parents Television Council which has claimed the show goes too far. “I think it reeks of desperation, if they have to position themselves as so edgy and so controversial that they’ve been called out by us,” said Melissa Henson, PTC director of communications.

CW marketing boss Rick Haskins says the following: “What we’re trying to do is communicate with the audience in a way that they like and can appreciate,” he said. “This sort of campaign resonates with someone who likes ‘Gossip Girl’”.

LALATE note to CW: just because an ad resonates a message doesn’t mean anyone wants to watch it.

Barton talks about her recent DUI in the spread. “That was a low point for me. I never, ever would have thought I would be arrested. I was disappointed because it associated me with a group of girls [Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan] that I would rather not be associated with. That was the biggest bummer for me – I didn’t leave my house. I was too embarrassed. They made such a big deal out of it with these other young actresses, that, for a little bit, I wanted to crawl into a hole and die. ….It was a stupid thing to do. But I’ve done a lot to pay back for what I did.”

But if you remember, the actor also was arrested for not having a driver’s license in the first place. To say she is disappointed with herself and never reportedly applied for a drivers license sounds a bit sugar coated.

Barton confirms she was offered CW’s Gossip Girl but turned it down. For what instead? Who knows.
