Genevieve Cook, Obama Ex Girlfriend after Alex McNear, Prompts New Biography

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Genevieve Cook (photos below), Obama’s ex girlfriend after Alex McNear, is the subject of a new biography. Genevieve Cook, dubbed his “New York girlfriend”, dated Obama when he went to Columbia University. Alex McNear dated Obama during his time at Occidental College. Now those love affairs are being reexamined in the new book “Barack Obama: The Story.”
Genevieve Cook details in the book include letters between the two. While the entries are not particularly “love letters”, the correspondences provide the backdrop for the passages Obama wrote himself in his own book“Dreams of My Father”.
Washington Post reporter David Maraniss authored the latest book. Maraniss claims that Obama’s book “is a remarkably insightful exploration of his internal struggle but should not be read as rigorous factual history.” Obama has yet to reply to Maraniss’ remarks.

Cook’s journal entries are the backdrop for many of Maraniss’ passages. In one entry, Cook writes “I’m left wondering if Barack’s reserve, etc. is not just the time in his life, but, after all, emotional scarring that will make it difficult for him to get involved even after he’s sorted his life through with age and experience.” She adds “Hard to say, as obviously I was not the person that brought infatuation. (That lithe, bubbly, strong black lady is waiting somewhere!)”
Obama previously wrote about the “New York girlfriend” that “There was a woman in New York that I loved.” He added “She was white … Her voice sounded like a wind chime.”

Cook and Obama met in 1983 in the East Village at Christmas Party. He was 22, she was 25. Maraniss writes “She remembered how on Sundays Obama would lounge around, drinking coffee and solving the New York Times crossword puzzle, bare-chested, wearing a blue and white sarong.” He adds “His bedroom was closest to the front door, offering a sense of privacy and coziness.”
In her journal, she wrote “I open the door, that Barack keeps closed, to his room, and enter into a warm, private space pervaded by a mixture of smells that so strongly speak of his presence, his liveliness, his habits – running sweat, Brut spray deodorant, smoking, eating raisins, sleeping, breathing.” For more, click HERE.
