Hurricane Ike is approaching Galveston Island. The weather forecast for Galveston Island is putting its seawall in jeopardy, the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 in memory; the fate of Galveston to Boulivar Island over the next 24 hours could be deadly.

The 1900 Hurricane killed 8,000 in Galveston. It struck the island, marking the worse hurricane disaster in U.S. History.

NHC says 20 foot surges Friday and Saturday. NHC is predicting “large and dangerous battering waves”; forecasters say as high 50 feet for Galveston Island.

“Because of the very large expanse of hurricane force winds, Ike will create a storm surge well in excess of what would normally be associated with a storm of its intensity,” says NHC.

The speed is suggesting that Ike could hit the Galveston Island consistently for many hours, not being a fast moving storm.

Bolivar Peninsula is under Hurricane Ike attack. The Bolivar Peninsula is having people airlifted to safety, the Galveston Island ferry closed!

Bolivar Peninsula residents were evacuated by Coast Guard officials this morning. Meantime, the Bolivar Peninsula ferry is no longer an evacuation option.

Ike is expected to hit Matagorda Bay affecting West Galveston Island, Jamaica Beach, Bolivar Peninsula, Omega Bay, San Leon, Bacliff and Freddiesville.

Ike’s projected path has been tracked by LALATE since mere tropical storm status. But today forecasters near Bolivar are agreeing - Ike’s current path is hard to predict because of constant sudden shifts.

High tides have caused the Galveston-Bolivar Ferry to be now closed.

Hurricane Ike is hitting Galveston, Freeport in Brazoria County, attacking Corpus Christi, Houston, and Port Arthur. Galveston with Hurricane Ike could be the region worse Hurricane hit since Carla. Ike is now 760 km southeast of Galveston and 710 from Corpus Christi, Texas

Ike is currently Category 2 as of Friday morning and will upgrade to Category 3 Friday night and Saturday, says NHC.

“We’re not talking about gently rising water. We are talking about a storm surge,” Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said, ordering the evacuation of Galveston.

Galveston residents are preparing as Hurricane Ike is expected to hit as a Category 3 hurricane — late Friday or early Saturday.

The number of people remaining in Galveston is a huge problem after a mandatory evacuation order warned of “certain death” if you don’t evacuate.
