Glendale Fire 2013 Today: Chevy Chase Canyon Fire Spreading

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Glendale Fire 2013 aka the Chevy Chase Canyon Fire today May 3, 2013 is threatening Glen Oaks, Harvey Drive, the 2 Freeway and 134 Freeway. The Glendale Fire 2013 (fire map below) erupted at 2 pm PST today. Currently there are two different sections of the fires.

The first Glendale Fire is located east of the 2 Freeway, in the hillside, near homes. Water drops are being effectuated currently. This location is situated near to structures often featuring older Spanish tile construction. The second Glendale Fire is a vegetation fire, literally on the shoulder. Brush next to the shoulder of the westbound 2 Freeway is burning.

The Glendale Fire which is growing currently at 3:30 PM PST today prompted immediate road closures. The Southbound 2 Freeway to the Westbound 134 Freeway is closed. Specifically, the southbound 2 Freeway is closed at the Mountain Avenue off-ramp. Holly Street is closed. And Harvey Drive is closed at Westbound 134 as well. Officials have also evacuated the 500 block of Solway Road.

The cause of the Glendale Fire remains unknown. But ironically two fires began flaring up at 2 PM today at two different areas. One fire is burning west of the 2 freeway and a second fire is burning in the hills. That combination of blazes is causing a lot of smoke and ash in the air. Smoke is crossing over the freeway prompting visibility difficulty, drivers report to news.

The fire is spreading between Chevy Chase Canyon and Glen Oaks Canyon. Officials quickly closed Chevy Chase Canyon today. Officials are concerned because the area is very populated. And compared to the Springs Fire, the houses in the area are predominately older homes not built to Cal Fire resistance standards.

LAFP has dispatched four helicopters, thirty-seven firefighters on scene. Officials are also worried that there is a lot of brush right near homes. For continuing coverage of this and other fires across the area today, click HERE.

Camarillo Fire 2013 Today: Springs Fire Map Widens to Deer Creek

Camarillo Fire 2013 Today: Springs Fire Map Widens to Deer Creek

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Camarillo Fire 2013 aka Springs Fire 2013 today (fire map below) is striking Deer Creek Road, Sycamore Canyon Road and sections of Point Mugu. The latest news update on the Camarillo Fire 2013 as of 9 am PST is much the same as before sunrise. The change however is a Navy Seabee Training Center.

Officials tell news that the Camarillo Fire 2013 still has two major hotspots. Neither is in Camarillo nor Malibu. Rather the fire remains active in Ventura County land. Two sections of the fire are being designated by officials. They are the Deer Creek Road leg and Sycamore Canyon Road leg. Both of these two flanks are near PCH.

But winds are blowing the fires back on-land. That good news suggests that onshore breezes are pushing the fire back onto itself.

The fire is not near Malibu currently. It is far west of Yerba Buena Road, Neptune’s Nest restaurant, and Mulholland Highway. But PCH remains closed west of Mulholland Highway all the way into Camarillo, officials tell news.

Meantime, land around a Navy Seabee Training Center is on fire. But no military structures are burning, officials tell news.

The overall fire numbers are unchanged. Four thousand homes are threatened, no new evacuation order changes have been modified since last night. Humidity levels are improving at now 20%. A marine layer is coming later today. And a wind advisory has been cancelled. The fire remains at 10% containment. Roughly two hundred homes near Deer Creek Road have not been damaged.

Camarillo Fire 2013 Update: New Map Shows Malibu PCH Closure

Camarillo Fire 2013 Update: New Map Shows Malibu, PCH Closure

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Camarillo Fire 2013 update today for May 3 is still underway. But the latest Camarillo Fire map above was authored at 7 am PST based upon a media briefing by Cal Fire Friday morning. Where is the Camarillo Fire aka Springs Fire 2013 currently, is it near Malibu, and is PCH closed today because of the Camarillo Fire?

First, PCH is closed in both directions today May 3, 2013 between Mulholland Highway and Las Posas Road. Second, the Camarillo Fire is not in Malibu currently. It is however west of Malibu, and is very close to PCH.

In a news briefing moments ago, Cal Fire identified two major hotspots currently. They are (as indicated in the map above) Deer Creek Road and Sycamore Canyon Road. Another hotspot is Laguna Peak inside of Point Mugu.

The fire currently remains contained at only ten percent. Fifteen homes have been damages. Ten thousand acres have been burned. Two thousand homes remained threatened. Officials are clear to news today that the biggest threat currently, and the strongest section of the blaze, is the Deer Creek and Sycamore Canyon sections. Winds are expected to increase later today. Hence, officials are trying to keep the fire in the west and not allow it to move east toward Yerba Buena Road.

“We’re fighting it the old-fashioned down-and-dirty way with boots on the ground,” Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Bill Nash said. “It’s hot, dangerous, dirty work.” No other changes have been made to orders in place earlier this morning. However, a further news update is expected shortly after 8 am PST today. For continuing coverage and updates click HERE. Below is a fire map released late last night followed by a map of Deer Creek’s location today.
