FIFA is suggesting this will be the most watched event in TV history. LALATE doesn’t think that will be the case.

Howard Webb World Cup Final Referee Controversy

SOUTH AFRICA (LALATE) – Controversy is surrounding the choice of Howard Webb to referee the 2010 World Cup Final. Howard Webb’s pick as World Cup Final referee is not resting well with Spanish players, says reports Saturday.

Howard Webb (England) will serve as the referee for Netherlands vs. Spain just two years after his controversial work on Austria vs Poland at the European Championship. Howard Webb’s Euro final ruling was captured in a documentary “Kill the Referee”; in real life, Webb was also the recipient of death threats. Poland’s Donald Tusk said he wanted Webb’s head after the game.

But now at age 38, Webb has the biggest honor of his profession. The question is whether he deserves it?

80,000 spectators Sunday may see a Webb different Sunday than previous World Cup games this summer. So far, Webb hasn’t given out one penalty or red card in South Africa.

Webb has his supporters though. Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore, issued the following statement in favor of Webb: “We see the hard work and professionalism of Howard Webb, Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey week in week out when they are officiating in the Premier League. So, it is great to see their fantastic season, where they have already represented English refereeing in the Uefa Champions League final, topped off with the ultimate appointment – the Fifa World Cup final”.

Premier League referees chief Mike Riley issued the following statement additionally: “This is a tremendous achievement for Howard, Mike and Darren to officiate the Fifa World Cup final, made all the more remarkable given that no other officiating team has been given it off the back of the Uefa Champions League final in the same season. It’s not only recognition for their excellent tournament in South Africa so far but also the progress they have made internationally over the last four years.

“As a team they’ve worked incredibly hard to get to this stage, starting back at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in 2007, then Euro 2008 and last year the 2009 Confederations Cup. It’s just rewards for all their efforts.”
