Nigeria vs England 2011: Obuh Seeks Country's First Title

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – When Nigeria vs England 2011 takes to the field this afternoon, Nigeria’s Head Coach John Obuh knows that he has a challenge. Nigeria has been one of the most impressive teams in this FIFA World Cup U-20 tournament. And yet, despite countless years of reaching the quarterfinals and finals, Nigeria has never won. Can Obuh achieve that goal this year?

Nigeria has finished second two times, and third once, in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. But the team has never earned a title. Its last advance to the quarterfinals was four years ago. Tonight, Nigeria has that chance to advance again.

In Group Play, Nigeria proved it has a scoring powerhouse. It also proved it has amazing depth. Nigeria ended the Group action with an incredible twelve goals in three games. It destroyed Guatemala 5-0 after Egbedi, Ajagu and Kayode scored. It made news against Croatia with a 2-5 win. Kayode, Suswam, Musa and Nwofor (twice) all delivered points for their country. And against Saudi Arabia, Musa and Kayode delivered a 0-2 win.

England, however, has struggled. In Group action, it qualified to this round of 16 in third place. Yet, it failed to ever score a goal in group play. It had a draw against Mexico, Argentina and North Korea.

So can Obuh do it tonight? Compared to Spain’s eleven goals, Obuh’s team made news as the highest scoring team in group action. The hope for Nigeria’s fans (live scores HERE) is that the talent continues this evening.

Iniesta Shirt Tribute For Dani Jarque

SOUTH AFRICA (LALATE) – Andres Iniesta’s shirt was a tribute to Dani Jarque today. Andres Iniesta’s shirt, a message of memory for Dani Jarque, remains of the great latest images of this 2010 World Cup.

With a scoreless game, Spain and Netherlands went into overtime. A stunning assist gave Andres Iniesta the game winning goal at nearly the 111th minute of play. Upon his winning shot, Andres ran to the sidelines and ripped off his Spanish jersey. Underneath was a white shirtless t-shirt with blue letters written on it. The letter read “Dani Jarque seimpre con nosotros” (“Dani Jarque is always with us”).

The reference is to the famed defender Dani Jarque who sadly passed in August last year of a heart attack. Afterwards, Iniesta explained further the shirt and his thoughts about Dani: “This is for Dani Jarque, for my family, for all of the people. It is the result of hard work over a long time and some difficult moments.”

Jarque died during a pre-season training trip in August 2009. “I wanted to carry Dani with me. We wanted to pay tribute to him and we thought it was the best opportunity to do so.”

Coach Vicente del Bosque added tonight “I think our effort, our flair … is never ending, that will last forever. We have excellent players in this squad and they demonstrate that every time they go on the pitch.”
