Zac Efron - Could his Career Trip by Doing Footloose?

Is Paramount’s plan to remake Footloose with Zac Efron in Kevin Bacon’s role a horrible mistake? Many online sites are saying it is.

2006 has been a rush to remake movie musicals like Hairspray. But online fan sites of Kevin Bacon are saying that Hairspray is no Footloose.

Footloose, no matter how horrible it was as a movie, was a pop classic for its generation. For many, it was “their movie”. Hairspray never was that.

Today, the people who called Footloose their movie are in their 30s. Bacon, born the same year as Madonna, turns 50 next year. For those to see their movie remade would be as painful as having Britney Spears remaking “Like a Virgin”.

The Footloose musical was never as well received as the movie. The Footloose Efron project would be a remake of the musical adapation of Bacon’s film. The musical had mixed reception from critics but did well on ticket sales.

What do you think?

Ironically, Efron’s demographic with the smash Disney hit High School Musical 2 is not 30 year olds. Ask any preteen who Kevin Bacon is, they probably won’t know.

But if Efron’s plan is to become a leading film star for a broader demographic than kids who stay home on a Friday night to watch a Disney hit, doing a Bacon reprise may be a difficult step to dance.

Zac Efron: Will Footloose and Seventeen be his next movies?

If you aren’t under 20 and don’t know Zac Efron, you can be excused (at least for this week). Zac Efron has become the biggest heathrob of his generation, literally overnight and major leading star.

Efron, star of Disney’s blockbuster sequel “High School Musical 2″ is likely to do a remake of Footloose (the musical) and Seventeen, “a reverse Big where a guy in his late 30s goes back to high school with everything he knows from experience.”

While the original “High School Musical” also proved to be an overnight sensation for Disney when it bowed in 2006 (watched by 7.7 million viewers), the sequel eclipsed its predecessor by nearly 10 million viewers.

Efron ironically told Rolling Stone Magazine he refused to go on the High School Musical tour. “If I had to hear the High School Musical songs anymore, I probably would have jumped off something very tall,” he joked.
