Ellen Music Lawsuit!
Ellen DeGeneres is an American Idol judge. But “Ellen” the talk show is now a defendant in a major music lawsuit.
Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show is being sued by as many as SEVEN record labels that claim when DeGeneres danced on her talk show, since inception, the songs you heard were used without authorization from the record labels and broadcasted.
ELLEN (the show) is being sued by Arista Music, Atlantic Recording Corp., Capitol Records, Motown Record Company, Sony Music Entertainment, Virgin Records America and Warner Bros. Records.
The suit filed Wednesday claims when ELLEN was contacted by plaintiffs and asked why they aren’t licensing songs, defendant allegedly said “[we don't] roll that way.”
The suit claims:
“As sophisticated consumers of music, Defendants knew full well that, regardless of the way they rolled, under the Copyright Act, and under state law for the pre-1972 recordings, they needed a license to use the sound recordings lawfully.”
Telepictures Productions claims it is trying to resolve the matter on “amicable and reasonable terms.” Telepictures Productions says DeGeneres is not a defendant but is “a tremendous music enthusiast and advocate.”
