Painter Mizzou Head Coaching Deal Considered

Painter Mizzou Head Coaching Deal Considered

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A Matt Painter Mizzou deal was not reached Monday, despite initial erroneous reports. Is Matt Painter Mizzou’s new head coach for men’s basketball? That was the assertion earlier Monday; but late today, that report was widely refuted.

Early Monday, Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News reported “Matt Painter [heading] to Missouri [for] 7 yrs 14 million”. Such is not the case. While no deal was reached Monday, Painter will meet with Missouri representatives sometime this week, confirms Mike DeArmond of The Star.

Insiders have long thought Missouri would pursue the Purdue Coach for the job. On Monday morning, The Star was able to report that Missouri did contact Painter or agent Buddy Baker.

How much will Painter potentially get offered? Jeff Rabjohns reports a possible price tag would be in excess of $2 million annually. Like other reports, Rabjohns indicates that the Painter Missouri meeting will be this week and that no deal has been reached or even discussed.

FOX’s Jeff Goodman also called Mondays’ reports of the deal as false. “Not sure what you are talking about, but I said this thing with Painter and Missouri was NOT done” tweeted Goodman today.

Brian Gregory Becoming Georgia Tech New Basketball Coach

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Brian Gregory is becoming Georgia Tech’s next men’s basketball coach, says reports. The Brian Gregory Georgia Tech deal is to be confirmed in a news conference to press Monday, says multiple news sources today.

Terms of the contract have yet to be revealed.

After eight season at Dayton, Gregory had reportedly informed his students of the move, claims CBS. Gregory takes over for the recently fired Paul Hewitt after 11 seasons.

790 The Zone Sports radio is reporting the news Monday, stating “Multiple sources are reporting that Brian Gregory will be the next Head Basketball Coach”. The AJC is reporting the same. “Brian Gregory of Dayton is reportedly the new Ga. Tech basketball coach. “

The press conference is anticipated for Monday. Gregory has yet to comment about the news reports.

Marquette vs. UNC – Jimmy Butler Making Harrison Barnes “Uncomfortable”

Marquette vs. UNC - Jimmy Butler Making Harrison Barnes

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – As Marquette vs. UNC battles this evening, Jimmy Butler will prove if Marquette has what is needed to stop Harrison Barnes and the Tar Heels’ drive. UNC’s Harrison Barnes has averaged fifteen points this season and nearly six rebounds.

But a quick perusal of his logs reveals that Barnes has been on fire the last few days, significantly.

Barnes delivered twenty-two points against Washington, twenty-four points against LIU-Brooks and forty for the win against Clemson. During the regular season, a typical game for Barnes was only twelve points.

Jimmy Butler, however, has not been as commanding on the court. Butler shot ten points against Syracuse and fifteen versus Xavier. But in earlier rounds, he had upwards of twenty, even thirty, points per game.

Marquette hasn’t dominated its last games either. It beat WVU by six points, Syracuse by only four points; but it delivered a stunning eleven point win over Xavier.

On the court, Butler knows he will be guarding Barnes. He tells ESPN News that his role is to take Barnes off his game and make him feel … uncomfortable. “You have to make him uncomfortable,’’ Butler said. “Make him feel like he has to work for every dribble and every move that he makes.”

In contrast, UNC’s wins coming into tonight’s game have been commanding. They beat two previous competitors this month by upwards of nearly twenty points, even Duke by over thirteen points.

Start time is 7:15 PM on CBS.

Elite Eight Countdown – Derrick Williams Dominates Arizona vs Duke

Elite Eight Countdown - Derrick Williams Dominates Arizona vs Duke

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Four of your NCAA Elite Eight teams were revealed Thursday night as the West and Southeast competitors advanced. Tonight the final four teams for the NCAA Elite Eight tournament (bracket here) will be revealed for the East and Southwest tournaments. But will there be more shockers tonight like Thursday evening?

Coming into Thursday’s first round of Sweet 16 games, news reports were consistently predicting Duke and Wisconsin to advance. Neither happened. In what became one of the biggest blowouts of Thursday night, number five Arizona defeated number one Duke by sixteen points. By the end of the evening, the first four of the Elite 8 were revealed – UConn, Florida, Arizona, and Butler.

In Arizona vs. Duke, Arizona actually trailed after the first half. But in the second, the team put up twenty-two more points than Duke. Derrick Williams had a resounding thirty-two points, thirteen rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. “It makes me feel great,” he told ESPN after the game. “If we win this game on Saturday, we’ll be known as one of the greatest Arizona teams to play.”

In Butler vs Wisconsin, Butler’s Howard had an impressive twenty points and twelve rebounds to hold off Wisconsin driven by Taylor with twenty-two points. Elsewhere, Florida advanced in a 83-74 win against BYU, UConn advanced against number two seed SDSU with a narrow 74-67 win.

Number five seed Arizona will battle number three seed UConn in the Elite Eight Saturday. Game time is 7:05 PM EST on CBS. Earlier, number eight seed Butler will battle number two Florida, 4:30 PM EST also on CBS.

Arizona vs Duke: Mike Krzyzewski Narrowing on History

Arizona vs Duke: Mike Krzyzewski Narrowing on History

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – If Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler have a big game tonight, the Blue Devils will prevail in Thursday’s Arizona vs Duke Sweet 16 showdown. But for Duke, getting both Smith and Singler on point, in the same game, hasn’t been that easy recently. Smith is up for national player of the year with twenty-one points per game. But Singler’s seven rebounds, added to Plumlee’s nine, is necessary to finish the equation for Duke tonight.

The Blue Devils look the best on paper coming into tonight’s NCAA game. They are tenth overall in points per game. The destroyed their competitor on March 13 by nearly thirty points and their competitor five days later by nearly forty points. But when they faced Michigan, they won by a mere two points.

Smith’s twenty-one points is aided by Irving’s seventeen per game. But it’s the free throw percentages at eighty percent and three point percentages at thirty-five percent that has to hold up tonight.

The game is on CBS tonight at 9:45 PM EST.

For the Wildcats, the rebounding is just not impressive. They are 193rd in rebounding and ninety-first in assists. While Williams has been averaging nineteen points per game and eight rebounds, the team’s next point leader is Jones at ten points. Arizona’s wins have been close, as well. They beat USC by five points, Memphis by two points and Texas by one point.

There is one other factor to consider. Mike Krzyzewski is two wins away from the Final Four; he’s also two wins away from matching Bob Knight’s record for most Division 1 wins at 902.

“What he’s done at Duke speaks for itself, and that’s part of playing Duke is playing against a coach who has been there so many times that it’s never to your advantage going against them in this tournament,” Arizona coach Sean Miller told ESPN this week.

BYU vs. Florida: Jimmer Fredette Takes on Healthy Kenny Boynton

BYU vs. Florida: Jimmer Fredette Takes on Healthy Kenny Boynton

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – For tonight’s NCAA Sweet 16 game of BYU vs Florida, Kenny Boynton will be ready, despite a previous ankle injury. Florida coach Billy Donovan tells news that Boynton’s ankle injury suffered during the team’s win against UCLA shouldn’t sideline Kenny tonight.

Donovan tells local news that the injury has healed enough to allow Boynton to move and shoot effectively tonight. Boynton along with Walker has been Florida’s best shooters. While the team is ranked only ninety-eighth overall in shooting, Walker and Boynton are both averaging fourteen points per game and less than forty-percent in field goal percentage.

BYU’s Fredette is delivering an average twenty-nine points per game, helping his team rank the eight overall in shooting. With Davies and Hartsock delivering six rebounds per game each, the team is ranked overall sixteen in rebounds as well. Despite their loss to SDSU on March 12, they’ve been beating their opponents since by ten to twenty points.

Start time is 7:27 PM on TBS tonight.

Despite Fredette delivering thirty-four points in the team’s win over Gonzaga, ESPN predicts Florida to win. Bleacher Report predicts the same, pointing to the Gators’ defense as decisive.
