Katia Zatuliveter Says She’s Not a Russian Spy

LONDON (LALATE) – Katia Zatuliveter (photos below) says she’s not a Russian spy. Katia Zatuliveter admits she faces spy charges and deportation. But Zatuliveter tells news that she doesn’t know why is she is charged.
Katia Zatuliveter is the latest spy-scandal to rock the West in 2010. Anna Chapman, who went on to pose in Maxim Magazine, capitalized on her fame after being deported from the U.S. on espionage charges.
Katia Zatuliveter is now accused of getting a job with the British Parliament three years ago to access secrets. But her employer say she is innocent. Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock hired Zatuliveter three years ago. He sits on the Commons Defense Committee and is vice-chairman of the all-party Russia group. Hancock claims he and certainly Zatuliveter don’t have access to military or government secrets.
Others disagree.

In a new fascinating report, Oleg Gordievsky explains how espionage works, from recruitment, to avoiding surveillance. Despite Hancock’s remarks, Gordievsky says, if Katia was in fact a spy, her job would have made her a “treasure for the London station”. Espionage experts have also claimed that Zatuliveter’s position may have granted her access to other members of Parliament to target for personal data.
How are young spies recruited? Gordievsky explains a large majority of spies today are former students, often living in St Petersburg, approached when they are 17 or 18 years old. In many cases, the Russian spies are then sent to western universities, taught how to gain useful positions.

But if Katia was a spy, how was she not caught until three years later? MI5 resources are reportedly limited. Once a person like Katia is suspected, immediately MI5 would have attempted to determine her alleged supervisor.
Today, Katia’s father came to her defense. “[England is] dipping my daughter in dirt… why is everything happening in such an uncivilized way?” Katia in a news statement proclaimed her innocence today indicating “I was arrested on Thursday and told I would be deported. Nobody explained why.”
