Officials tell news that a 4.3 magnitude Nicaragua earthquake today struck in follow up to the 6.1 magnitude Nicaragua earthquake that began on April 10. The quake was shallow. Reps tell news that the quake began at 12:17 pm. The terremoto en Nicaragua hoy was only eleven miles below ground level. As a result the temblor could be felt across the region.
Reps tell news that the Nicaragua earthquake was seven miles east of Nagarote. The quake was twelve minutes northwest of Ciudada Sandino and fifteen miles east of Laz Paz Centro. The quake was also seventeen miles northwest of Managua.
In January of last year, a 5.1 magnitude quake was twenty miles west of Jiquilillo. The quake was thirty-eight miles west of EL Viejo and thirty-nine miles west of Corinto. Officials also told news that the quake was forty-one miles west of Chinandega.
UGSS tell news that “The boundary between the Cocos and Nazca plates is characterized by a series of north-south trending transform faults and east-west trending spreading centers.” They add that “Earthquakes along the Panama Fracture Zone are generally shallow, low- to intermediate in magnitude (M<7.2) and are characteristically right-lateral strike-slip faulting earthquakes.”
