LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – “El Chapo Guzman Escapes from Islas Marias Prison” proclaims a hoax website tonight. Did El Chapo escape tonight and is his wife with him? The same website that created the “Gregorio Chavez” hoax is tonight pushing a fake El Chapo escape story.
El Chapo has not escaped. And Gregorio Chavez is not in custody. Several days ago a website falsely claimed “Family members of Gregorio Chavez are claiming he is the man currently under arrest by the government of Mexico and are falsely claiming him as famed … lord Joaquin Guzman.”
This time, the same website is focusing on a Mexican prison. The website is falsely starting today “Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ (Shorty) Guzman has just escaped from the ‘Islas Marias Federal Prison’, which is located in the island Maria Madre in Mexico.” It adds “The Islas Marias Federal Prison has a history of multiple escapes and escape attempts with 76 escapes in the last 25 years.”
The website further claimed that the faux escape left dozens of persons dead. “The Escape is one of the most intense and bloodiest escapes in history with over 64 cartel members and prison guards dead.” The site adds “An estimated 130 Sinaloa cartel members attacked the Prison armed with firearms, mostly AK-47?s, and helped El Chapo escape with brute force in less than an hour. The cartel members killed an estimated 45 prison guards, while only 19 cartel members were killed in the prison battle. El Chapo was taken away in a helicopter reportedly flying southeast towards South America.”
But the entire story is a hoax. Buried at the bottom of the website, in the footer, is a disclaimer that the site is a “combination of real shocking news and satire news to keep its visitors in a state of disbelief.”
For years fans have been tricked by fake death reports by sites like Global Associated aka Mediafetcher. But in 2013, the site headed into a different arena: sports injuries. Known for their fake death reports, Global been apparently expanding into the broken leg hoax business. With the title “Pro Football News, Clay Matthews Breaks Both Legs In Car Accident”, Global uses a preexisting template and just switches out the player’s name. The body of the stories are all the same.
“The accident involved a 2012 BMW driven by Clay Matthews and a 76 year old female driver in a 2010 Audi” reads the fake report. “The driver of the Audi was issued a citation for failing to stop at a red light before striking the vehicle driven by Clay Matthews at a high rate of speed.”
For now, another website is using non-template stories to proffer believable stories about current events. Nevertheless, El Chapo has not escaped and remains in custody.
