Officials tell news that a 4.8 magnitude Chile earthquake today hit near Valparaiso, Chile just after 6:52 PM local time. The quake was one of the strongest to hit the region in recent months. USGS indicates to news that the quake had virtually no depth. It began only one mile below sea level. As a result the quake could be felt across the region.
USGS tell news that the Chile quake today started forty-eight miles west of La Ligua. It was fifty-seven miles south of Illapel and sixty-two miles west of Salamanca. The quake also started sixty-three miles west of Hacienda La Calera as well.
Earlier this year, in January, a 6.7 magnitude posting a nominal depth struck the region, officials tell news. The quake was only sixteen miles below the earth’s surface. Comparable quakes have been striking the region as well this year.
In July another quake hit thirty-eight miles southwest of Diego de Almagro. The quake was also fifty-eight miles northeast of Copiago. It began one hundred nine miles southeast of Taltal and one hundred forty miles northeast of Vallenar.
