Papua New Guinea Earthquake Today 2013: 6.0 Strikes West Coast of Island

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A 6.0 magnitude Papua New Guinea earthquake today 2013 has struck the west coast of the island. The Papua New Guinea earthquake today July 16, 2013 began out to sea but posted only a moderate depth.

Officials tell news that a 6.0 magnitude Papua New Guinea earthquake today started just after 7:35 PM local time today. The quake started off the west coast of the island, out to sea. But USGS indicates to news that the Papua New Guinea quake began with a moderate depth. It erupted only twenty-eight miles below sea level. As a result the quake could be felt to the east on-land.

The Papua New Guinea quake started forty-eight miles west of Panguna, officials tell news. The quake was fifty-two miles west of Arawa as well. The quake was further away from other towns, however. It started roughly two hundred miles from Kokopo and three hundred miles from Kimbe. Reps tell news that the quake was also roughly four hundred miles from Honiara in the Solomon Islands.

In May 2012, a 6.7 magnitude quake hit the region. It was centered outside in New Guinea, roughly forty-one miles east of Goroka. The quake could be felt seventy miles south in Madang. USGS indicated to news at the time that the quake was roughly two hundred miles north of Port Moresby and one thousand five hundred miles from Brisbane.

The region has experienced 6.8 magnitude quakes several times this decade. In 2002, however, the region suffered four deaths, USGS reminds news.

To date, the worse damage was the July 17, 1998 earthquake. Registering at a 7.0 magnitude, the quake killed thousands. “At least 2,183 people killed, thousands injured, about 9,500 homeless and about 500 missing as a result of a tsunami generated in the Sissano area. Maximum wave heights estimated at 15 meters” USGS tells news.
