LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A Dominican Republic earthquake today 2013 has just struck, Red Sísmica de Puerto Rico is reporting. The Dominican Republic earthquake today July 16, 2013, a strong terremoto registering a 4.9 magnitude, began moments ago. No damage has been reported from the Dominican Republic temblor hoy.

Officials tell news that a Dominican Republic earthquake began moments ago just after 3:10 pm local time today. The quake was reported as a 5.1 initially but then downgraded to 4.9 magnitude. USGS indicates to news that the quake posted a nominal depth. The quake began only fifteen miles below ground level. As a result the quake could be felt across the island.

The Dominican Republic earthquake today was five miles northwest of Pimentel. The quake was seven miles east of San Francisco de Macoris and thirteen miles northeast of Fantino. Officials tell news that the quake was fourteen miles north of Cotui and fifty-two miles north of Santo Domingo.

In June last year another quake struck off the island. Red Sísmica de Puerto Rico reports news that at 2:48 am local time today a 3.0 magnitude quake was felt across sections of the country. The quake had a moderate depth, USGS indicates to news. It was centered ten miles below the earth’s surface. The quake was eleven miles from Isabela, and just outside Quebradillas.

The quake was also twelve miles from Camuy, eighteen miles from Arecibo. The quake was forty-eight miles west of Ponce, USGS reported to news, and fifty-nine miles west of San Juan. At the time the region has suffered five moderate quakes. A 3.67 magnitude quake struck on December 26, 2011. On the thirtieth, a 3.36 struck at well.
