LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Artemis Racing AC72 member Andrew “Bart” Simpson has died. The Swedish Artemis Racing yacht AC72 for the America’s Cup 2013 capsized today. Andrew “Bart” Simpson was found dead after the tragedy. A second member, unnamed currently, survived after suffering injuries, officials tell news.
In a news statement, America’s Cup confirmed Simpson’s passing today May 9, 2013 shortly before 3:30 pm PST. “It is with immense sadness that Artemis Racing confirms the tragic death of crewmember Andrew “Bart” Simpson today in San Francisco.” CEO Paul Cayard said in a news statement thereafter “The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened. Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family”
Shortly after 1 pm PST America’s Cup had told news “Artemis Racing capsize AC72 during training. Support boats on scene to assist in recovery. Updates to come.” Coast Guard responded. But by 2 pm, local fire confirmed one fatality. Twelve persons were on board when the boat capsized. Reports claim that Simpson became submerged for ten minutes during the tragedy today.
Last October, Oracle Team USA’s boat capsized also in San Francisco. The America’s Cup is set to began in July. Today was a training session in the San Francisco Bay.
