LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Matthew Warren, Rick Warren’s son, has died. Matthew Warren is dead following an apparent suicide. Warren was 27 years old. Rick Warren’s son had told his family previously that he wished to end his life rather than continue in pain. Pastor Warren told news today that his son had suffered from mental illness for sometime.
Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church told fellow church members in an email today April 6, 2013 that his son Matthew had died. Matthew was the youngest of Rick Warren’s three children. Matthew Warren, 27, of Mission Viejo died shortly after 10 am PST on Friday April 5, 2013, officials are confirming to news. Supervising Deputy Coroner Daniel Aikin tells news that the cause of death was an apparent suicide.
Pastor Warren asked his congregation today for their prayers in remembering his son.”In spite of America’s best doctors, meds, counselors, and prayers for healing, the torture of mental illness never subsided… after a fun evening together with Kay and me, in a momentary wave of despair at his home, he took his own life.”
Pastor Warren also detailed his son’s battle with mental illness through the years. In his service Saturday in Lake Forest, the Pastor said Matthew wanted to take his life previously. “I’ll never forget how, many years ago, after another approach had failed to give relief, Matthew said, ‘Dad, I know I’m going to heaven. Why can’t I just die and end this pain?'” Warren wrote. “But he kept going for another decade.”
The Pastor later added “No words can express the anguished grief we feel right now. Our youngest son, Matthew, age 27, and a lifelong member of Saddleback, died today…. But only those closest knew that he struggled from birth with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts.”
Funeral arrangements have not been announced to news.
