ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Is the Post Office open on Good Friday 2013, are banks closed on Good Friday, and is Good Friday a Federal Holiday? Mail service, post office branches, and bank locations are annually struck by confusion over Good Friday, because of its difference across federal and state agencies. This week is no different. OPM, the Office of Personnel Management, confirms to news this week what is closed, what is open, and why Good Friday might be a holiday for one bank but not for another.
In January, OPM reminds news what are the federal holidays, and when they will be observed that year. But nowhere on OPM’s annual list is ever Good Friday. Officials tell news that Good Friday, pursuant to federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103), is not a federal holiday. Hence, federal agencies, offices, and departments don’t observe Good Friday as a holiday, reps confirm to news.
But if you need to head to a state agency today, they might be closed too. Why is that? Good Friday is a codified state holiday in twelve U.S. states. Officials remind news that Good Friday is also a holiday in US territories of Guam, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. But in other states, Good Friday is not observed.
So what does that mean for mail, the post office, local and state agencies, Wall Street, and mass transport? OPM tells news that U.S. Postal Service observes federal holidays. Hence, the Post Office is open today on Good Friday, and mail service is uninterrupted today as well. Of note, OPM also indicates to news that Easter Sunday is not a federal holiday either. So the Post Office and mail service will be normal on the day after Easter as well, April 1, 2013.
The real difference is in banks. Wall Street is closed on Good Friday. Banks that are federal regulated are generally closed today. But non-federally regulated, aka non-federally insured, banks may be open today.
And while federal offices are closed today, state and local offices in states that do not observe Good Friday will be open, but often with shorter hours. For the states and territories that do observe Good Friday, expect all government agencies closed. Otherwise, retail and private sector non-regulated businesses are generally open today as well.
