LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A Chile earthquake today 2013 has just struck west of Argentina. The terremoto en Chile hoy, a temblor registering 6.7 magnitude, began moments ago. Officials tell news that the quake today Wednesday, January 30, 2013 struck in the Atacama area.
Officials report that the massive, and shallow, Chile earthquake today erupted shortly after 4:15 pm local time. The quake registering a 6.7 magnitude posted a nominal depth, USGS indicates to news. The quake was only sixteen miles below the earth’s surface. As a result, the quake could be felt across the region.
USGS details to news that the quake began fifty-six miles south of Copiago. The quake was roughly one hundred thirty miles northeast of Coquimbo. The quake also began only two hundred fifty miles west of La Rioja, Argentina. Officials tell news that the quake was situated roughly four hundred miles from Santiago, Chile.
Chile has been struck by a series of lesser but still strong quakes this month. Earlier in January, a 4.4 magnitude temblor struck seventy-three miles southwest of San Pedro de Atacama. The quake also began seventy-five miles southwest of Calama and seventy-eight miles east of Antofagasta.
Today’s quake is located near the 5.9 magnitude quake from November. That quake began with a 5.1 magnitude shortly after 3:16 pm local time. In the next three hours that day, three more quakes would erupt, including a 5.9 magnitude quake. That November quake began thirty-seven miles southwest of Cartagena and forty-nine miles west of Melipilla. USGS also indicated to news that the November quake was fifty-seven miles northwest of Santa Cruz.
