LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Is the Post Office open on Martin Luther King Day? Is there mail service delivery on MLK Day? Banks, credit unions, lenders and Post Offices are closed today, officials tell news. There is also no mail delivery today on MLK either.
Each year, the Office of Personnel Management in Washington DC issues that year’s federal holidays. OPM’s determinations are pursuant to Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103). But OPM gives clarity when holidays fall on weekends or similar conflicts erupt.
Today marks the second federal holiday of 2013, OPM tells news. Monday January 21 marks the observance of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. But OPM tell news, that for 2013, “the Inauguration Day holiday falls on Monday, January 21, 2013, which is also the legal public holiday for the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(c).)”
As a result, Inauguration Day will be observed concurrently with MLK Day. In a news statement, OPM says “For Federal employees who work in the District of Columbia, Montgomery or Prince George’s Counties in Maryland, Arlington or Fairfax Counties in Virginia, or the cities of Alexandria or Fairfax in Virginia, Inauguration Day is observed concurrently with the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday.” OPM also adds that “Federal employees in these areas are not entitled to an in-lieu-of holiday for Inauguration Day.”
Today, there will be no mail delivery, no postal service, and no branches open. Banks and similar financial institutions are also closed, OPM tell news. Federal, state, and local government and municipal agencies including court houses will be closed as well. But consumer businesses, like malls, retailers, and similar are all open.
