ST LOUIS (LALATE) – A strong but deep Chile earthquake today 2013 has erupted near Antofagasta. The Chile earthquake today Wednesday, January 09, 2013 began in the morning hours. But unlike recent quakes in the county, this one wasn’t centered out to sea, but on-land.
Officials tell news that a 5.1 magnitude Chile earthquake erupted today at 8:21 am local time. The quake, however, delivered a deep epicenter. USGS indicates to news that the quake began seventy-one miles below ground level. As a result, the breath of the quake was limited to immediate area around Antofagasta.
USGS reports to news that the quake began sixty-nine miles southeast of Antofagasta, and roughly one hundred miles northeast of Taltal. The quake was also approximately one hundred miles south of Calama and one hundred fifty miles northeast of Diego de Almagro.
Earlier today, a 4.1 magnitude quake struck Limache, Chile as well. Officials tell news that the quake was forty-one miles from Santiago, fourteen miles from Quillota. The quake also began six miles from Limache and nine miles from Villa Alemana.
Most Chilean quakes last fall struck out to sea, not on land. In November, a Chile quake struck forty miles southwest of San Antonio. The quake was forty-two miles southwest of Cartagena and fifty-seven miles west of Melipilla. USGS also told news at the time that the quake was sixty-six miles northwest of Santa Cruz.
