NFL Black Monday 2012 refers to the first Monday after the conclusion of the NFL regular season in which coaches not heading to the playoffs are typically fired. After hours of NFL Black Monday predictions, several names are being confirmed today.
First, moments ago, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Gene Smith is first to be fired. “Jags owner Shahid Khan announced that the team is parting ways with general manager Gene Smith”, Schefter told news Monday.
Second, the fate of Ken Whisenhunt is in doubt. The Cardinals coach will meet team president Michael Bidwill this morning, Schefter tells news.
Third, more than an handful of firings will be announced today. Schefter on Monday added four more names to the pot. He said that head coaches “to be fired today include Andy Reid, Pat Shurmur, Norv Turner, Romeo Crennel.”
“I met with Gene Smith this morning to inform him of my decision to go in a new direction and thank him for his dedication to the Jaguars since the inception of the franchise,” owner Shahid Khan said in a news statement today. “I am personally appreciative for his efforts during my first season of ownership in the NFL.”
He added “Gene is a good man with a long career ahead of him in football, and I know this season was as difficult for him as anyone with our organization. I sincerely wish Gene and his family the very best, today and always.” For more later today, click HERE.
