ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Kasandra Perkins, Jovan Belcher’s girlfriend (photos below), is being remembered today by Jamaal Charles. When Kasandra Michelle Perkins (wrongly cited as “Cassandra Perkins”) was gunned down Saturday by her boyfriend Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City Chiefs, several families were hurt. The Perkins murder was witnessed by the woman’s mother. The Belcher suicide was witnessed by the Chief’s coach. And now, officials confirm that Jamaal Charles’ family was also impacted. Charles’ wife is Kasandra Perkins’s cousin.

The senseless killing of Kasandra Perkins remains unexplained still Sunday. KCTV tells news that Kasandra Perkins went to a Trey Songz concert on Friday night. When she got home, a disagreement erupted between her and Belcher.

Perkins and Belcher had welcomed their child just last September 11. To help with the baby, Kasandra’s mother had moved in with the couple. The tensions Saturday morning, however, concerned not the mother but something between Perkins and Belcher.

Family members report that the couple dated for several year. During that time, there was rarely if anything prompting tension between Belcher and Perkins, 22. On Facebook the two posted praise of one another. On Thanksgiving, she had glowing remarks about the holiday, her boyfriend, and their new baby.

Kasandra Perkins was seeking to become a teacher. A native of Texas, Perkins had begun to take classes. Enrolled in Blue River Community College in Independence, her hope was to become a teacher in the coming years.

So how did a family so close erupt into a murder suicide within a matter of hours?

Quarterback Brady Quinn tells news that the team is still in shock. As reported on Saturday, Belcher, after murdering Perkins, drove to the Chiefs training facility. He was met by coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli. During a discussion, in which Belcher thanked the Chiefs for his opportunity in the league, Belcher got out of a car and committed suicide.

“I think everyone is just so shocked at what had taken place, being who it was and being what had happened,” Quinn told the KC Star. “I think people are still trying to digest everything let alone think about playing a game. It’s tough to put into words.”

Quinn says that the child is what everyone is thinking about. “And then we’re all thinking about his daughter, three or four months old and without a parent. It’s hard to not allow the emotions of the situation to creep into your head with the game this close. But we’re going to do the best we can to concentrate on the task at hand.”

Belcher had advocated child rights as a young student at UMaine. There he got a bachelor’s degree in child development and family relations. UMaine Head Football Coach Jack Cosgrove said Jovan was a “tremendous student-athlete…His move to the NFL was in keeping with his dreams. This is an indescribably horrible tragedy. At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Jovan, Kasandra and their families.”
