ST LOUIS (LALATE) An Alabama deputy sheriff was killed on Black Friday during a shootout. Sheriff Deputy Scott Ward was killed by Michael Jansen who eventually was also fatally shot.
Ward has a long history of serving his country and local community. Before joining the force fifteen years ago, he was U.S. Coast Guard reservist. He served in Afghanistan last year and had been a SWAT member locally.
On Friday, Baldwin County Sheriff officers responded to the residence of Michael Jansen of Fairhope. During their visit to Jansen’s mobile home, twenty miles from Mobile, Jansen allegedly began firing at certain officers.
Ward was instantly killed. A second deputy not yet identified to news was shot; he remains in critical condition today. “I have worked with him his entire time that he has been with the Sheriff’s Office,” a local sheriff told the Al.com today. “He was a great law enforcement officer.”
A news statement issued by the Sheriff’s Office today indicated that sheriffs “were engaged in an officer involved shooting”. Additionally, officials told news that Jansen was “also shot during the exchange and he was pronounced dead at the scene.” The matter remains under investigation today.
