ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Rowan Atkinson is retiring his Mr. Bean character. Mr. Bean needs to be retired, Rowan tells news this week. While fans disagree, Rowan says his age is making the role too difficult.
While Mr. Bean has delighted fans for decades, Rowan Atkinson tells news today that many of his nuisances require mobility, agility and the ability to be childish. He says that is not believable for someone his age. Now 57 years old, Rowan says that his character won’t be as believable going forward.
“The stuff that has been most commercially successful for me — basically quite physical, quite childish — I increasingly feel I’m going to do a lot less of,” he told The Daily Telegraph news today. “Apart from the fact that your physical ability starts to decline, I also think someone in their 50s being childlike becomes a little sad,” he added. “You’ve got to be careful.”
Rowan is not particularly clear when he would retire the character that first debuted in the 1980s. But despite a recent appearance at the Opening Ceremony of London’s Olympic Games, Rowan says he wants to play more dramatic roles.
