ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Is the Post Office open on Veterans Day? Is their mail delivery, and are banks open on Veterans Day? Veterans Day 2012 will be observed on Monday, November 12, 2012, officials tell news. While Veterans Day this year falls on November 11, the federal holiday will be observed this Monday, OPM reminds news.
Annually, in January, the federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM) gives clarity to citizens of national holidays. But as reported on LALATE over the years, the confusion erupts when the holiday falls on the weekends. Federal law provides, however, if the holiday falls on Saturday, it will be observed on Friday.
If it falls on Sunday, like this Veterans Day does, it will be observed on the following Monday. “For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).”
Officials in a news statement in January for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management said this “November 11, 2012 (the legal public holiday for Veterans Day), falls on a Sunday”. As a result, “For most Federal employees, Monday, November 12, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes.”
All post offices will be closed this Monday, as will banks. There will no mail delivery. Federal services normally open on Friday and Saturday, like banks and the post office, will be open as usual. Local, state, and other governmental offices will be closed on Monday as well, officials tell news.
