ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Is the Post Office open today October 8, 2012 for Columbus Day? Are is there mail today, and are banks and financial institutions closed on Columbus Day as well? The Post Office is closed October 8, 2012 for Columbus Day with no mail being delivered, officials tell news. Additionally, most banks are closed as well.
OPM (the Office of Personnel and Management) each year reminds customers and news about U.S. Federal Holidays. Postal branches close in accordance with those holidays and OPM directives. But yet some confusion still erupts.
The confusion, however, most often occurs when the holiday falls on a weekend day. OPM reminds news that “when a holiday falls on a non-workday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday.” The reason, OPM explains, is that “that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule.”
Not only will post offices and banks be closed today, but also local and state offices, agencies, and divisions will also be closed. Malls and public transport will be operating as usual. The next federal holidays to prompt confusion are Monday November 12 for Veterans Day and Thursday November 22 for Thanksgiving Day.
