LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – John Edward Smith was exonerated Monday and set to be freed as singer Chris Brown gave applause of support. John Edward Smith is a former gang member wrongly accused of a crime he didn’t commit. But on Monday, his life changed, once again.
In 1993, John Edward Smith was found guilty based upon a sole eyewitness’ erroneous testimony. Today, Smith appeared before Judge Patricia Schnegg. She ruled that the eyewitness had given false testimony. Since the crime, that witness had completely recanted their testimony.
As Judge Patricia Schnegg announced the ruling, Smith received applause from friends, family, and another spectator: Chris Brown. Brown was in court set to appear before the same judge. He was set to have a probation update about his 2009 case with Rihanna.
Earlier today, Rihanna tweeted messages of support for Chris Brown. She wrote “Praying for you baby, my best wishes are with you today”. She added “Remember that whatever God does in our lives, it is well done.”
Brown replied “thank u so much.” Earlier today, Brown told fans “love you team breezy. I appreciate all the dedication you guys show at all times. Glad to inspire positive change.”
