ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Yunel Escobar eye-black tape remarks have resulted in his suspension today. Yunel Escobar comments on eye-black tape were worn last Saturday. But today, the Toronto Blue Jays suspended Escobar for three games.
Officials also tell news that Escobar’s lost salary will be donated Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and he will undergo sensitivity training. Escobar has defended the remarks appropriate. Escobar has yet to comment to news about today’s decision.
Escobar’s words were written in white, in Spanish, over the black tape during the game. Officials tell news the Escobar has written messages on his eye-black tape before. But in this case, because the print was purportedly small, team officials and fellow players claim they couldn’t see the message during the game.
The team previously issue a news statement that read “the Toronto Blue Jays do not support discrimination of any kind nor condone the message displayed by Yunel Escobar during Saturday’s game. The club takes this situation seriously and is investigating the matter.” Escobar is reportedly set to address the matter in a news conference this afternoon, start time 3:30 pm EST.
Escobar’s message was split between the two pieces of tape. Escobar has previously told news that he did not intend any harm with the message.
