Rio Ferdinand Twitter Comment Prompts FA Fine

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – A Rio Ferdinand Twitter comment has resulted in a £45,000 fine for the Manchester United player. The Rio Ferdinand Twitter comment was made in the context of Chelsea defender Ashley Cole. In July, LALATE reported that FA charged the Man United star with improper conduct.
Last month, FA first broke news about its charge against Ferdinand. FA said at the time that “The allegation is that the player acted in a way which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute by making comments which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or color and/or race.”
Today Rio was fined for that same comment by FA. “Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand has been fined £45,000 after an Independent Regulatory Commission found proven a charge of improper conduct in relation to a comment posted on Twitter”, FA said in a news statement today August 17, 2012.
“The Commission decided that the comment was improper and brought the game into disrepute. In addition, the Commission found that the breach included a reference to ethnic origin, color or race. Ferdinand was fined £45,000 and warned as to his future conduct.”
FA first delivered news of the fine to Ferdinand back on Wednesday, however. “Both The FA and Manchester United were served the reasons on Wednesday 15 August 2012 and the deadline for appeal passed at 12noon on Thursday 16 August 2012.”
