CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – Elmira, NY tornado photos reveal the damage that began late today July 26, 2012. A Elmira tornado touched down this afternoon shortly after 5 pm EST, local news is reporting. Streets are blocked in some communities while widespread power outages are being reported.

Officials are still assessing the damage in Elmira. But social media has been reacting to the damage within the hour. One person wrote “The amount of trees down in Elmira is ridiculous”. Local news is reportedly that power lines have fallen across the region. Officials tell news that fire crews are in route to the area from nearby communities.

WSYR-TV Syracuse is reporting news that “We’re beginning to get photos of damage in Elmira, where officials say a #tornado touched down after 4 p.m.” Mike Seidel is reporting that “Trees down, roofs off buildings and people trapped in vehicles according to emergency manager.” He also mentions reports of  “destroyed houses on fire” adding “people trapped Unknown injuries”.

Accuweather is reporting the same but indicating those reports are still not verified. “Unconfirmed report of a tornado in Elmira, NY, 3:58 pm. EDT. Trees down, roofs off buildings, people trapped in vehicles”. Local news is reporting that upwards of ten thousand residents may currently be out of power in the region.
