Home Run Derby 2012 Lineup Impacted with Selection Format Change

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – The MLB Home Run Derby Lineup 2012 tonight was impacted by a MLB selection format change, last year. In 2011, officials told news that the MLB Home Run Derby Lineup would feature a new player selection format. This year, that format returned.
The MLB Home Run Derby Lineup 2012 tonight (start time 8 PM EST on ESPN) features the American League with Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees as captain. He will have on his team Prince Fielder of the Tigers, Mark Trumbo of the Angels and Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays.
The National League has captain Matt Kemp. His team is comprised of Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies, Carlos Beltran of the Cardinals and Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates. McCutchen replaces the injured Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanto. The live telecast airs direct from Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
The last three winners have been Robinson Cano (Chase Field), David Ortiz (Angel Stadium), and Prince Fielder (Busch Stadium). The format had grown to ten players in the late nineties but went back to an eight player format in 2000.
Seven years ago, the Home Run Derby made news with a new record for the most home runs in a single round: fifteen. A year later, the record was destroyed by Bobby Abreu hitting twenty-four in the first-round.
Officials remind viewers today that the Derby hitting format features eight players, batting in three possible rounds. During the first round, all eight players will be given a ten “out” format. The can hit as many home runs as they can deliver. An “out” is categorized as swing that doesn’t end in a home run. Fans are reminded that players need not swing at each pitch.
The four players with the top score advance to the second round. Any tie is broken by a five out swing. The second round follows the same format as the first. But by the end of the second round, players will be eliminated by the lowest combined score from rounds one and two.
