LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Barbara Mullenix CSI actress murder case is revisited today in a rebroadcast of 48 Hours. The Barbara Mullenix (photos below) CSI actress case dominated Los Angeles news back in 2008. Her daughter, Rachael Mullenix, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for her mother’s murder. But still questions surround the crime scene.
Rachael Mullenix was convicted of killing her mother on Sept. 13, 2006 in Newport Beach. Officials had found a woman floating in the water near the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. The victim was a CSI actress. But her daughter claimed she didn’t do it.
Officials told news that victim Barbara Mullenix had been stabbed fifty-two times. In fact, the condition of the victim’s body was in such poor condition after the attack that officials had to use the serial number on implants to identify the body.
Officials initially had few clues. But soon they identified the body as Mullenix.
Barbara had married her husband in 1987 at age nineteen. It was her third husband. Thereafter the couple had daughter Rachael. Years later, the couple divorced. But by 2005, the mother and daughter moved to Southern California.
During the 48 Hours special from 2010, Detectives Steve Mack and Joe Cartwright told news that Barbara was found “wrapped in bedding. It appeared to me that she had been killed on a bed and simply wrapped up in those sheets”. They added “I think that the reason that the mattress and the box spring were missing is because they were saturated in blood”.
At trial, Rachel’s father Bruce Mullenix called his ex-wife a “crazy, mean drunk.” He said that his wife one hit his daughter. “She was a completely different person when she was drunk”.
He also told jurors “Rachael was very upset she was caught in the middle of two people controlling her”. He added “She loved her mother, she loved Ian. She didn’t know what to do.”
After being sentenced, however, Rachel told the court “I don’t care what the jury thought. I did not do that to my mother. I can’t even believe this is happening to me.” Her father also told the court that his daughter didn’t murder his mother. “I know in my heart that she didn’t do this. Her mother had problems. No one knows how bad it was other than Rachael and myself.”
