Vanuatu Earthquake Today 2012 Does Not Prompt Tsunami Threat

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A strong Vanuatu earthquake today 2012 did not prompt a tsunami threat. The Vanuatu earthquake today Friday, July 06, 2012 could be felt across the region, but officials issued no tsunami alert. No reports of injuries have yet to be detailed by local news.
A Vanuatu earthquake today erupted shortly before 1:30 pm. The quake registered a 6.3 magnitude, officials tell news. The quake, however, had a substantial depth. USGS indicates to news that the quake struck roughly one hundred miles below the earth’s surface.
The quake erupted outside of the Vanuatu town of Port-Olry. Officials tell news that the quake was twenty-eight miles northeast of Port-Olry and fifty-seven miles north of Luganville. The quake was also centered roughly two hundred miles northwest of Port-Vila, Vanuatu. Officials indicate to news that the quake was four hundred twenty-eight miles northwest of New Caledonia.
In March, a 6.7 magnitude quake struck the region. And in November, a 7.0 magnitude quake struck the region. In a news statement then, authorities said “based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-Wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Repeat. A destructive Pacific-Wide tsunami is not expected and there is not tsunami threat to Hawaii.â€
Officials tell news today that, “based on the earthquake’s magnitude, location and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami is not expected.â€
