Anthony Wayne Smith Charged with Murder

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Anthony Wayne Smith, former Oakland Raiders player (mug shot photo above), has been charged with murder, again. Anthony Wayne Smith was charged with murder in the 2008 death of Maurilo Ponce. But after that case ended in a hung jury, Smith expected a retrial on just the Ponce case.
This week, however, Anthony Wayne Smith was charged, not just with Ponce’s death, but also the alleged 1999 murder of Kevin and Ricky Nettles and the alleged 2001 murder of Dennis Henderson. Officials have yet to tell news what prompted their recent decisions.
In April, Smith’s Ponce trial ended in a hung jury. Ponce, 31, was a resident of Lancaster when he was found dead in 2008. Just days ago, jury selection was about to commence for the retrial in the Ponce case.
But now police claim that Smith was involved in the kidnapping of the Nettles from a Los Angeles car wash in 1999 and the kidnapping and shooting of Henderson two years later.
Smith’s lawyer, Michael Evans, says his client is not guilty and is surprised by the new charges. Smith played with the Raiders for seven seasons.
