Man Eating Face in Miami: Cannibal Claim Disputed by Examiner

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – The man eating face investigation in Miami took a new turn today when doctors told news that Ronald Poppo is able to eat and talk. But on Friday, an examiner also determined that cannibalism did not occur during Poppo’s attack. Officials confirmed today that Rudy Eugene did eat off the face of Ronald Poppo during his Miami attack. But they now also indicate that Eugene did not digest the flesh as previously asserted by police.
The latest results were revealed in a news statement by a post death examiner Friday and by medical personnel today. Rudy Eugene during his face eating attack did as much damage to Poppo’s face as previously believed. Ryder Trauma Center officials briefed news about Poppo’s condition. They have been treating him since May 26 when Poppo was attacked on Miami’s MacArthur Causeway.
First, officials tell news that Rudy Eugene did eat off virtually all of Poppo’s face down to around his mustache. Initial news reports claimed that Eugene ate off Poppo’s face down to around his lips. Today, Ryder Trauma Center issued two pictures of Popppo. With them, they indicated that Poppo lost virtually his entire face down to the mustache; his right eye did survive but is substantially damaged. His nose, also, may not be repairable. Officials also claim that Poppo has two wounds to his chest.
But despite his horrific injuries, Poppo is talking and eating. He is awake and alert. Hospital officials claim he has even been able to listen to the NBA Playoffs.
“I’m very pleased to say Mr. Poppo is doing very well today,” Ryder’s Chief of Trauma Dr. Nicholas Namias told news today. “He is eating, he is talking with us.”
Meantime, on Friday, new evidence about the man eating face investigation in Miami was revealed. While toxicology results are several weeks away, a post-death examiner told news what they found in Rudy Eugene’s stomach.
Sources tell local news that autopsy results for Eugene found none of Poppo’s flesh in Eugene’s stomach. But reports claim two undigested pills were found in the stomach.
Yet, investigators tell news that parts of Poppo’s flesh was found on the ground at the crime scene. Autopsy results reportedly reveal that Poppo’s flesh was found still stuck in Eugene’s teeth. And while undigested pills in his stomach were located, officials still don’t know the nature of those pills.
Meantime, Rudy Eugene’s girlfriend, tells news that her boyfriend was not a cannibal. For reasons still unclear, she hired Gloria Allred recently. In a news statement, Allred told news that she and her client “are very concerned about the issue of cannibalism and the number of cases that are being reported. We are hopeful that … we can help the public understand the dire consequences of cannibalism for its victims.”
Allred would not explain why she was hired and indicated no lawsuit is pending. But she added “cannibalism is a serious issue and is very dangerous to the health and well-being of both the cannibal and the victim. It is very important that the social taboo and stigma that have long been attached to this subject continues and that society condemns cannibalism, rather that trivializing it or glamorizing it.”
“This is a high-profile case, and she wants the truth to come out about Rudy Eugene,” said Allred. “She suffered a loss of someone she truly loved. I make no apologies for being here to support her.”
