Man Eating Face in Miami: Cannibal’s Companion Prompts New Mystery
CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – Man eating face attacker Rudy Eugene erupted into a cannibalism rampage against Rudy Poppo on the MacArthur Causeway. But new evidence today reveals that, before his man eating face attack, Eugene was acting erratic on South Beach. Moreover, Eugene was not alone in his final hours before the attack. Rather, Eugene was with a mysterious man, new surveillance video reveals. Police now confirm to news the Eugene, by Saturday afternoon, had separated from that man, completely discarded his keys, his cellphone, and removed all his clothing.
In their latest update, police confirm to news that Rudy Eugene discarded his clothing and belongings hours before that Poppo attack. Additionally, new surveillance video reveals Eugene was with a male companion hours before that attack.
Rudy Eugene left on that fateful Saturday morning from his home in Miami Gardens. He had spent the previous night with his girlfriend. He left in the early morning hours, walking out the door with a Bible in hand. That girlfriend tells news that Eugene was fully clothed, with his cellphone. She also tells news that Rudy’s exit at 5:30 am on a Saturday morning was unusual. She is adamant he was not en route to Urban Beach Week.
Such was not the case. Eugene’s brother tells news that Eugene was in fact en route to the Urban Beach Week. Moreover, police found Eugene’s vehicle, not on the mainland, but on South Beach.
The key timeframe in the Ruddy Eugene investigation is between 6:30 am and 1:54 pm that Saturday. At 6:30 am, Rudy calls the girlfriend and tells her that his car has broken down. At 1:54 pm, he is miles away, completely unclothed, and commencing his cannibal attack on Poppo, consuming ninety percent of Poppo’s face.

Police tell news that they are certain that Eugene got to South Beach shortly before 7 am. Eugene abandoned his car in front of the Miami Ad School’s exit path. Now surveillance video has been obtained by local news from that school.
The operators of the school tell news that Eugene’s car is shown smoking on the video. The car appears to be overheating from a failing radiator. The operators further tell news that Eugene is seen alongside the car with a male companion.
But who is the male companion? “We got it on tape… you can see him getting out of the car… you can see the car smoking… you can see… the smoking coming out of the engine” the operators tells news. Eugene is seen with a male companion changing their clothes before walking away. The operator tells news “they seemed fine”. When asked if Eugene and the male were exhibiting strange behavior, the operator said no. “They seemed fine.”
What happened to that mystery man? Police are now certain that Eugene at sometime thereafter separated from that man. Then Eugene progressively removed all his clothing, tossed his keys and his cellphone, and began walking from South Beach toward the Causeway in the hope to get to the Mainland.
But why did Eugene remove his clothes? Officials tell news that they still have no determination. A new report today, however, claims that Eugene years earlier tossed his shirt and threatened to kill someone.
Former heavyweight boxer Melton Bowen tells local news that Eugene, during a dispute about music in 2007, ripped off his shirt and threatened to kill the boxer. “I’m not scared of no one. He took his shirt off and came at me saying ‘I’m going to kill you!’” Bowen tells news that he had to defend himself, only to knock out Eugene with one punch.
Eugene’s family has claimed that Eugene was a non-violent person. But police reports indicated otherwise. In a 2004 police report, Eugene’s own mother said that Rudy threatened to kill her.
Also newly released are 911 tapes prior to the cannibalism attack. A bus driver called dispatch and described the encounter before Poppo’s clothing was removed by Eugene. Of Eugene, the bus driver tells dispatch “Listen, there is a [unclothed] man on the MacArthur Causeway. He is beating another man to a pulp — like on top of the man, beating him, the man is bleeding.” She adds “He’s going to kill that man, I promise you.”
Another caller, however, reports Eugene’s actions with Poppo’s clothing. “You can’t miss him”. A third states “These two bums were going at it with each other, taking up the whole lane. I think they were fighting or something.”
Rudy Eugene’s girlfriend says that Eugene’s actions are out of character. “That wasn’t him … Somebody did this to him”. She believes he was the victim of a curse. Poppo, in turn, remains today at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police have yet to detail to news results of testing on Eugene’s car and clothing.
